- Every theory has strengths and weaknesses
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT. The most researched type of therapy
- Behavior is shaped by your thoughts, often uses worksheets
- Works to install new ways of thinking and directing your thought patterns
- Can use CBT on a lot of different issues, addictions, relationships...
- Requires practicing over and over, and role playing is helpful
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, DBT. A subset of CBT. Focuses on emotional regulation. Important for trauma work
- Works to create stability
- Mindfulness...self aware of emotions and body reactions
- Distress tolerance awareness
- Interpersonal effectiveness
- Emotional regulation...how to come back from reactiveness
- Designed for borderline personality patients, but is helpful for a variety of diagnosis
- This requires a lot of buy-in from clients. You have to choose to practice and commit to change and choose to practice self examination and be uncomfortable
