During the Middle Ages, the development of professional bodies emerged as a response to the socio-economic changes following the fall of the Roman Empire, which led to the fragmentation of urban centers and the rise of feudalism. Guilds became essential institutions that regulated trades, ensured quality standards, and provided social support to their members. These associations, which included merchants and craftsmen, established training and apprenticeship systems, set prices for goods, and maintained monopolies over specific trades.
