This first episode addresses the root of why we can suffer from health anxiety. Amy explains that symptoms and fears are normal and not indicative of mental weakness. She explains that health anxiety, previously called hypochondria, is a deeply ingrained pattern of fear and hyper-awareness intended to protect but often traps individuals in a cycle of anxiety. Key points include recognising that these anxious feelings are a result of an overactive nervous system, distinguishing between intuition and anxiety, and avoiding attempting to 'fix' the fear directly. The episode emphasises the importance of creating new neural pathways through new habits and behaviours, understanding the fight-or-flight response, and signalling safety to the nervous system. Overall, it reassures sufferers that they are not alone or crazy and offers guidance on moving beyond health anxiety.
