  • "Engage With Colby!" - Professor Josh Urich: Explorer George Waymouth & Allen Island
    2024/04/10

Join Colby College Professor Joshua Urich and Pam Salokangas, Colby College Assoc. Director of Engagement for their discussion about Explorer George Waymouth's visit in 1605 to what would become the Maine coast. A marker was placed on Allen Island in 1605; it was replaced with a marble cross in 1905, commemorating the 300th anniversary of Waymouth's visit to what would become Allen Island--part of Colby's Island Campus.

We discuss religion at that time, how that exploratory visit marked an opportunity to claim that land for England, the interactions of Waymouth with the indigenous people who were living in the area, and how the cross does not represent the first religious service in North America, as it has been couched by travel writers and others.

Josh and I discuss his various explorations through his religious studies research and how he landed at Colby College.

Professor Dale Kocevski, Associate Director of Physics and Astronomy joins me on this "Engage With Colby!" episode as we talk black holes, galaxies, stars, extraterrestrials, and more. Professor Kocevski's research interests include active galaxies, galaxy evolution, galaxy clusters, and large-scale structures.

We discuss his teaching techniques when helping students to envision the size of our solar system and how far apart planets and stars are from the sun and each other. We talk about how he was introduced to the "hobby: of astronomy, and his most mind-boggling space fact. He's been involved with projects such as CEERS, CANDELS, X-UDS, and ORELSE, and we talk alot about the James Webb Telescope (referred to the JWST in the recording) and how it's photos are changing astronomy.

In visiting his personal website and seeing some of his family photos, you can tell how much his family enjoys hiking; we wrap up with a brief tidbit about his favorite family hike here in Maine.

  • "Engage With Colby!" - Deanna Perez '22 and Posse, Powerlifting, and Pluckers!
    2024/02/14

Join Ms. Deanna Perez, '22 and Pam Salokangas, Colby College Assoc. Director of Engagement for their discussion about the transition from Houston, TX to Waterville, ME, her experience with the Posse Foundation while attending Colby College, getting involved with power-lifting, and one of her favorite Houston restaurants--Pluckers.

Deanna and I met October 2023 while I was visiting Texas for Colby's Welcome To The City events.  We had a very engaging alumni group in Houston that evening, and during the second half of the evening, enjoyed a sit-down for some storytelling.  I thought of inviting her to join me for an episode of the "Engage With Colby!" podcast because I really enjoyed her story of her "posse," and how that group was formed, made the trek to Colby College for their undergrad degrees, and how they are still in touch today.   Deanna is a working professional now at Rice University as an Assistant Director of Engagement.

Enjoy this podcast session where we talk about Colby's COOT program, what Deanna loves about Houston, and how she has transitioned to her new position.
