  • When Your Routines Stop Working: Time Management for Changing Seasons
    2026/08/13
In this episode of Energy + Hours, I’m catching up with returning guest Rachel Newman about how much life can change as our kids get older, our work evolves, neurodivergence becomes part of the conversation, and we learn more about ourselves along the way.Rachel and I originally connected when both of our work was deeply rooted in early motherhood. Years later, our kids are older and our lives look different. Rachel is homeschooling three children and navigating ADHD and dyslexia in her family. My own work has evolved from Grow Like a Mother into a much broader conversation about time management, energy management, sustainable productivity, and building systems around the life you actually have.A big part of our conversation comes back to something I teach often: you are allowed to change the system. We talk about paying attention when something stops serving you, making smaller adjustments when the bigger circumstances can’t change, and using routines and transition tools to make daily life easier for ADHD and neurodivergent brains. In this episode:How motherhood and our needs change as our kids get olderDiscovering neurodivergence through your childrenLetting yourself change a decision or system that no longer worksHow seasons and life changes affect time managementCreating flexible routines when work, school, and home overlapUsing visual timers to support ADHD time blindness and transitionsEmotional regulation and accessing your tools when you’re dysregulatedPersonalizing routines, schedules, and productivity systems around your actual lifeThis episode is especially for you if:You’re in a season where your old routines have stopped working, your family’s needs are changing, you’re navigating ADHD or other neurodivergence, or you’re realizing that the productivity systems you used to rely on don’t fit your current life. It’s also a useful listen for moms who are homeschooling or considering homeschooling and feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices available. You don’t need to adopt somebody else’s entire system.Take what works. Leave what doesn’t. Reevaluate when your circumstances change. Build around the people who actually live in your house and the responsibilities that actually fill your calendar.About Rachel:Rachel Newman is a bestselling author, life coach, and homeschooling mom of three (twins included). She's the author of MomME, built on one core belief: moms matter too. That philosophy now fuels Happy Haus Homeschool, where she's writing a new book and handbook helping moms trade the "shoulds" for a homeschool that actually works for their family. • Your Brain Is Not a Filing Cabinet: The 3 Places Everything Should Live

    *****

You're folding laundry. Then you remember you need groceries. Which reminds you about an unanswered email. Which leads to a permission form. Which leads to a birthday gift you haven't ordered yet.

None of it was urgent. All of it interrupted you. Sound familiar?

In this solo episode, I'm breaking down the three places that everything in your life should live, and the one question you can start asking yourself today to stop carrying it all in your head.

Your brain is not a storage unit, a calendar, or a reminder system. It's a decision-making powerhouse and when you free it up from holding everything, that's when the creativity, the ideas, and the actual enjoyment of your life start coming back in.

    In this episode, we cover:

⏳ Why mental load and overwhelm are often a systems problem, not a willpower problem

⏳ The difference between a calendar, a task list, and a note

⏳ How to use the rocks-and-Tetris-pieces framework to schedule tasks around fixed appointments

⏳ High-energy vs. low-energy to-do lists for people who struggle with capacity

⏳ The one question to ask every time a new thought pops into your head

⏳ Why your best ideas come in the shower (and how to make that happen more often)

⏳ Practical ways to capture information on the go, including the screenshot trick

⏳ What it looks like to work with Jill and how her approach is built for your current season, not a long-term contract

  • What Happens When I Don't Manage My Own Energy
    2026/07/16

I preach rest. I preach self-care. I preach boundaries. And then I turned 40. I packed the entire summer full of birthday celebrations, a work trip to Calgary, camping, beach days, splash pads, star gazing, and every possible summer memory I could manufacture for my four kids... and ran myself ragged.

My 7-year-old drew me a picture of a tired whale. She titled it "Mama Whale is so tired." She saw right through me.

This episode is my honest debrief on what happens when I don't follow my own advice, and what I'm doing about it.

    In this episode:

    • How turning 40 coincided with one of my most overpacked, under-rested seasons
    • The specific kind of overwhelm that sneaks in when you're trying to make everything magical (and what it looks like for me: rage)
    • How perimenopause is showing up in my energy management in ways I didn't expect
    • The Time Magic™ Method and how I lost sight of it
    • The difference between rest and self-care, and why you can't have one without the other first
    • Sandra Dalton-Smith's 7 types of rest
    • Why "balance is a verb, not a destination" is more than a saying I throw around
    • What I'm doing this week to actually recover before the kids come back
