Please like, follow, and subscribe.   BREAK: COPY CENTRAL STORY 1: Eastside High School Approved for Marine Corps JROTC Program The U.S. Marine Corps has approved a JROTC program for Eastside High School in Newton County, marking progress in the district's goal to expand JROTC to all three traditional high schools. However, implementation may be delayed 2-3 years due to federal funding limitations. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III and Principal Jeff Cher expressed excitement about the program's potential to prepare students for military and civilian careers. Eastside will join Newton High, which already has a JROTC unit, while efforts continue to establish a program at Alcovy High. The district remains committed to expanding these opportunities for all students. STORY 2: Madison Post Office Closing For Renovations, No Date Given To Reopen The historic Madison Post Office will temporarily close for renovations starting June 12, with no reopening timeline provided. P.O. Box services will move to the Buckhead Post Office, while other operations may shift to the Greensboro Post Office, though this is unconfirmed. Starting June 14, P.O. Box mail can be picked up at Buckhead Post Office with a valid driver’s license. USPS has not shared further details about the closure or relocation plans. STORY 3: Two arrested in shooting at Covington park Two individuals, Dy’men Henderson of Lawrenceville and Levester Taylor of Atlanta, were arrested by Covington Police after a shooting at a birthday party at Academy Springs Park on May 25. Following an argument, Taylor allegedly fired shots at two victims in the parking lot, hitting a vehicle. Both suspects fled but were later apprehended. Taylor faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and firearm possession, while Henderson is charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and giving false statements. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.      We’ll be right back   Break: STORY 4: Cultural Center Brings Splitz Band To 'Funk On The Lawn' The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center will host the second annual “Funk on the Lawn” free concert on Saturday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., featuring The Original Splitz Band. Attendees can bring picnic setups and enjoy food from local vendors. The nine-member band, including Madison native Rufus Hope, blends Motown, jazz, gospel, and more. This marks Hope’s first public performance since recovering from a stroke. Last year’s event drew over 250 attendees and was a hit with the community. STORY 5: Fuesting named interim chief of Covington Police Department Assistant Chief Brent Fuesting has been named interim chief of the Covington Police Department following the retirement of Chief Philip Bradford, who served for 40 years. Fuesting, with 22 years of service, has held every position in the department and brings extensive leadership experience, including roles as captain and assistant chief. He holds a master’s degree in public administration and multiple leadership certifications. Bradford, praised as a mentor and leader, leaves a lasting legacy, having served in every rank and division of the department. His dedication has been celebrated by colleagues and the community alike.
