In 1953, a small group in Los Angeles took the 12-step approach that worked for Alcoholics Anonymous and opened it to anyone struggling with addiction, not just alcohol. That group became Narcotics Anonymous. In this episode, we cover how NA grew from a few meetings in North American cities to a worldwide fellowship. We look at how the Basic Text, published in 1983, set off rapid growth, and how NA differs from AA: it talks about powerlessness over addiction, not a single substance, and it lets each member define their own higher power.
We also look at what members say recovery has given them. In a 2015 survey of nearly 23,000 members, 92% reported better family relationships and 88% reported stronger social connections. Whether you’re new to recovery, supporting someone you love, or just curious about the 12-step tradition, this episode shows why peer support remains central to lasting recovery.
