And then, without any warning at all, the truth arrives anyway — not through a confession, but through Euryclea's hands, recognizing a twenty-year-old scar before her mind even catches up to what she's touching. Episode 12 covers Books XVIII and XIX of the Odyssey: a town beggar named Irus picks a fight with the disguised Odysseus at his own front door and is beaten in a single blow, Athena arranges for Penelope to appear before the suitors and collect gifts from every one of them while giving nothing back, and the evening ends with Eurymachus hurling a footstool that misses Odysseus and strikes a servant instead. After the house grows quiet, Odysseus and Telemachus hide the household's weapons, and Odysseus sits down for a long fireside conversation with his own wife, who doesn't recognize him. He tells her an invented story about hosting her husband years ago on Crete, describes the exact clothes Odysseus wore right down to a gold brooch, and reduces her to tears without ever revealing who he is. When Penelope calls for the household's old nurse, Euryclea, to wash the stranger's feet, Euryclea's hands find a scar on his leg from a boyhood boar hunt — and recognizes her master instantly. The episode ends with Penelope recounting a dream of an eagle killing her twenty geese, and announcing a contest for the following day that will decide who she marries.
