When life gets hard, what comes out of us is usually whatever we’ve been holding onto. If we’ve filled our minds with lies, fear, or shame, that’s what shows up. But if we’ve filled it with God’s Word, that’s what we’ll have to lean on. Jesus had Scripture deep inside Him. Even on the cross He was quoting it. That’s the goal for us too. Memorizing Scripture helps us hear from God, think differently, fight off lies and temptation, and be ready for the hard seasons before they come. It’s not about cramming verses, it’s about building a deep well of truth that we can draw from when we need it most.
Memorize a passage of Scripture
Step 1: Pick a Passage
Choose a section of Scripture that you want to memorize.
If you’re not sure where to start, Psalm 23 is a great option.
Step 2: Learn 2 Verses at a Time
• Focus on the first two verses.
• Read them out loud four times a day for one week.
• Let the repetition help the words settle into your mind and heart.
Step 3: Add More Each Week
• In the second week, add the next two verses.
• Keep reviewing the earlier ones as you go.
• Continue this pattern until you’ve memorized the whole passage.
Step 4: Use a 3x5 Card Trick
• Write the full passage on one side of a 3x5 card.
• On the back, write only the first letter of each word in the verse(s). This helps your brain recall the words while testing your memory.
