The penultimate sign or miracle Jesus performs before the ultimate sign of His own resurrection is His raising of Lazarus from the dead, described in John chapter 11. This great miracle foreshadows Jesus' own resurrection which was soon to take place. It also foretells the great, miraculous future bodily resurrection that all believers look forward to in faith and in hope.

"I am the good shepherd." "I am the door of the sheep."

What did this mean to Jesus' listeners when he spoke these words, recorded in the tenth chapter of John's gospel?

Is Jesus speaking only of Himself, or about pastors too?

If Jesus is the good shepherd, what does that mean for us as His sheep?

Join Pastor Andrew Gretzinger of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso, Indiana as we study and learn from this wonderful text together.

  • Once I Was Blind But Now I Can See!
    2024/06/07

The healing of the man born blind is one of the most fascinating chapters in all of Scripture. This man--whose name we are never told--receives his sight from Jesus in an unparalleled miracle. Then, after being dragged twice in front of the religious leaders -- most of whom are themselves spiritually blind-- this man quickly sees through their hardness and unbelief, forcing them to resort to personal insults.

But Jesus is not content to leave the man with merely physical eyesight. Jesus seeks him out and opens the man's spiritual eyes to see who Jesus truly is. The man immediately sees, believes, and worships.

But not everyone sees the truth about Jesus as clearly as the man born blind. Join Pastor Andrew Gretzinger and me as we delve into this extraordinary gospel account.

  • I Am The Light of the World -- John 8
    2024/04/20

    Send us a Text Message.

In this chapter of John's gospel, Jesus turns the tables on the Pharisees and scribes who try to trap him by bringing him a woman caught in adultery. He makes another of His great "I AM" statements when he says, "I am the light of the world." This leads to a debate with the Pharisees, and as a result, "many came to believe in Him: (v. 30).

Next, Jesus continues to challenge the Jews who had believed in him, leading to another debate that culminates in Jesus specifically and expressly claiming to be divine: "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." (v. 58). Not only does Jesus make this extraordinary claim, but He communicates it clearly to his listeners, who finally understand what He is saying, assume He is guilty of blasphemy, and immediately pick up stones to throw at Him--because the penalty for blasphemy was stoning under the Old Testament law.

But who is really blaspheming whom? Pastor Andrew Gretzinger of Good Shepard Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso, Indiana joins us for a spirited and wide-ranging discussion of this remarkable text.

  • Come To The Water

Here in chapter seven of John's gospel, Jesus stands up on the great day of the Feast and cries out: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" Later, in the book of Revelation, John echoes this Gospel invitation: "Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost." (Rev. 22:17)

How thirsty are we? And where are we going to quench our spiritual thirst? Will we turn to broken cisterns--all the lures and distractions of the world--that cannot satisfy? Pastor Andrew Gretzinger of Good Shepard Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso, Indiana joins us to find Gospel answers to these all-important questions.

The bread of life discourse takes a new turn in John chapter 6 verses 51-59, a passage that has given rise to much controversy. Are we to take Jesus literally when he tells His followers they must eat His flesh and drink His blood? If not, what is the Biblical warrant for not taking it literally and what are we to make of this? Join us for a spirited discussion with special guest Pastor Andrew Gretzinger of Good Shepard church in Valparaiso, Indiana, who helps us open this text, as well as the remainder of John chapter 6.

  • Physical and Spiritual Bread -- John chapter 6
    2023/09/12

    Send us a Text Message.

Chapter six begins with the fourth sign recorded by John in his gospel -- Jesus feeding of the five thousand, and continues with the fifth sign, Jesus walking on the water on the Sea of Galilee. Then, Jesus Himself explains the meaning of the feeding of the five thousand in the bread of life discourse, which forms the core of this chapter. There is incredibly rich and important teaching here. Jesus lifts our sights upward, away from the materialistic pursuit of physical bread, toward what we really need, the true, spiritual bread of life that only He can give.

Program note: Lord willing, our next episode will feature a special guest to discuss the "hard sayings" of Jesus found in verses 51-58 of this chapter. There, Jesus confronts the Jews directly with the reality that they are without hope unless they "eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood." This passage bears directly on, among other things, the Roman Catholic teaching of the Eucharist, and what does and does not take place when we engage in the sacrament of communion.
