Wie können verschiedene Positionen aus diversen künstlerischen Disziplinen, aus unterschiedlichen Herkunftsländern und auch Konfliktregionen in einer gemeinsamen Ausstellung gezeigt werden? In dieser Folge von Die Kulturmittler:innen spricht Host Amira El Ahl darüber mit der Kuratorin und Autorin Anna Karpenko.

Anna Karpenko, geboren in Minsk, lebt in Berlin und Leipzig. In dieser Episode berichtet sie von der Lage und (Un-)Sichtbarkeit von Künstler:innen in und außerhalb Deutschlands, der Bedeutung künstlerischer Freiheit und transnationalen Netzwerken.

Anna Karpenko ist auch Kuratorin der Ausstellung Once we were trees, now we are birds. Die Gruppenausstellung zeigte bis zum 8. Juni 2025 in der ifa-Galerie Berlin Werke von Stipendiat:innen der Martin Roth-Initiative. Sie ist eines der weltweit größten Schutzprogramme für bedrohte Künstler:innen. Das Gemeinschaftsprojekt vom ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen und dem Goethe-Institut schützt Künstler:innen und Kulturtätige, die sich in ihrem Herkunftsland für die Freiheit der Kunst, Demokratie und Menschenrechte engagieren, indem es temporäre Schutzaufenthalte in Deutschland oder in Drittstaaten ermöglicht.

Vor gut einem Monat wurde der Istanbuler Bürgermeister İmamoğlu verhaftet. Er gilt als aussichtsreicher Herausforderer des türkischen Präsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdogan bei einer kommenden Präsidentschaftswahl und seine Verhaftung wird weithin als politisch motiviert kritisiert. Dies nehmen wir zum Anlass, um die Kulturmittler:innen Folge mit der Menschenrechtsexpertin Selmin Çalışkan neu zu veröffentlichen. Ursprünglich erschien die Episode im November 2022 vor der letzten Präsidentschaftswahl in der Türkei.

Politisch motivierte Prozesse gegen regimekritische Personen sind in der Türkei nahezu an der Tagesordnung. Begründet werden sie durch die Anti-Terror-Gesetzgebung der Türkei, auch wenn der Europäische Gerichtshof diese Inhaftierungen als rechtswidrig einstuft – wie im prominenten Fall des Kulturförderers und ifa-Preisträgers Osman Kavala. In der aktuellen Folge des ifa-Podcasts berichtet die Menschenrechtsexpertin Selmin Çalışkan über die aktuellen Entwicklungen in der Türkei hinsichtlich Demokratie, Rechtsstaatlichkeit und dem Verhältnis zu Europa. Angesichts der bevorstehenden Parlamentswahlen im kommenden Jahr befürchtet sie eine Verschlechterung der Situation. Zur Unterstützung fordert sie eine aktivere und klare Positionierung Deutschlands und der EU gegenüber der türkischen Regierung.

This episode features Sverre Pedersen, the managing director of Freemuse, an independent non-governmental organization advocating for freedom of artistic expression and cultural diversity globally. As a documentary filmmaker and long-time activist for human rights, Pedersen brings unique insights into how self-censorship shapes the creative process, what pressure mechanisms are behind it and what institutions can do to protect artistic freedom.

Seit mehr als zehn Jahren versucht Russland die ukrainische Kultur zu bekämpfen. In dieser Zeit sind nicht nur unzählige Menschenleben bedroht und ausgelöscht worden, sondern auch kulturelle Denkmäler, Museen und Theater der Ukraine zerstört oder ausgeraubt worden. Noch bestehende Kultureinrichtungen in der Ukraine können wegen des Krieges nur eingeschränkt oder gar nicht öffnen. Kurz: Kunst, Kultur und Sprache sind in Zeiten des Krieges besonders bedroht. Zugleich ist Kultur gerade dann aber auch so wichtig wie selten. In dieser Podcast-Folge geht es deshalb darum, wie Kulturtätige, Intellektuelle und Künstler:innen, die im Exil oder an der Front in der Ukraine leben, ihre Kultur und Identität erhalten. Kateryna Rietz-Rakul, die Leiterin des Ukrainischen Instituts in Deutschland, spricht dazu mit Host Amira El Ahl.

On 30 August 2021, US troops and their allies withdrew from Afghanistan, leaving the country under Taliban rule. In this episode of Die Kulturmittler:innen – Deep Dive we’re joined by Emran Feroz to explore the human rights situation in Afghanistan which is marked by a complex interplay of political instability, cultural practices, and restrictive policies. Women’s rights in particular have been massively restricted since the Taliban took over, with bans on education, employment, and public freedoms. Violence against minorities, suppression of free speech, and harsh laws further worsen the situation.

Emran Feroz is journalist and book author, and regularly reports from and about Afghanistan for media such as Die Zeit, Al Jazeera, The New York Times or ifa’s online magazine Qantara.de.

Today is International Human Rights Day! Human Rights are the fundamental freedoms and protections that belong to every person, ensuring dignity, equality, and safety. They include the right to life, freedom from torture, and protection against discrimination. Unfortunately, Human Rights cannot be taken for granted and are often violated, for instance through war crimes or crimes against humanity. This makes their protection a global priority. The International Criminal Court (ICC) works to hold perpetrators accountable and support victims. Its Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) provides reparations and assistance, helping survivors of atrocities rebuild their lives. Today’s guest is the TFV’s Executive Director Deborah Ruiz Verduzco. In this episode, we talk about what justice means, explore the role of the ICC and TFV in defending Human Rights, and discuss how ongoing global conflicts influence the field.

The European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are two of the world’s most significant regional entities. In today’s episode, we explore the cultural cooperation between the two. Why was it so modest in the past and why is it crucial to enhance their cultural ties at the multilateral level? Interdisciplinary cultural historian and anthropologist Dr. David Ocón and Prof. Lluís Bonet, an expert on cultural economics, cultural policies and arts management, give insights into these and other questions – based on their recent study “Enhancing ASEAN-EU Relations through Cultural Cooperation: Realities and Unexplored Potential” published by ifa’s ‘Culture and Foreign Policy’ research programme.
