A guided tour through the stories that have shaped our culture and the world we live in.

Whether you’re a literature nerd, a romance aficionado, or just Not That Into Books, there’s no denying that the “great works” of literature have played a part in influencing everything from public policy to superhero movies. If you’ve ever wanted to know whether that pretentious guy on Twitter is correct in referring to news stories as “Orwellian,” wondered what stories inspired shows like Bridgerton, or just been curious about why, exactly, your high school English teacher was so insistent about assigning books by Dead White Guys, Didn’t Read It is the podcast for you.

  • Skirt Lunches and War Zones: Guy de Maupassant's "Boule de Suif"

Hey hey, did you miss us????

Just to reiterate what I said in the beginning of the episode: we'll have a sporadic summer schedule, with the goal of getting back to posting regularly in the fall, because I became a PARENT and it is DISTRACTING.

In the meantime, here is part one of our foray into Guy de Maupassant's famous tale of the Franco-Prussian war--a meditation on what we ask of each other, who really suffers during wartime, and how the rich basically always suck no matter where they're from. Enjoy! Love you lots!!

Where does war happen--in our hearts or on our phones? We're discussing Luigi Pirandello's classic short story "War," along with propaganda, the torment nexus, and why we keep feeding kids to the metaphorical woodchipper.

WE'RE BACK, DID YOU MISS US

It's the sixth fragment of the Canterbury Tales, and we're hanging with our buddy Chaucie while we learn about filial piety, fancast a Looney Tunes adaptation, and ponder the position of women in the collapsing Republic (not that one).
