  • Why Today’s Athletes Struggle to Believe in Themselves
    2026/08/18

Welcome to Episode 83 of the Dialed and Driven Mentality Podcast!

In this episode, Jeff Lerg and Natalie Ferenc take a step back from the technical side of sports to talk about one of the biggest challenges facing young athletes today: self-belief.

Athletes are training more than ever—but are they training the part of the game that controls everything else?

Jeff and Natalie share what they've seen firsthand through years of coaching, mentoring, competing, and working with athletes across different sports. From athletes breaking down after one mistake to young players struggling to identify their own strengths, they explore why so many athletes are having a harder time believing in themselves—and what can be done about it.

You'll hear Jeff's personal story of overcoming adversity and developing an unwavering belief in himself, along with practical strategies athletes and parents can use to build confidence, create better practice habits, set meaningful goals, and stay committed when success doesn't happen overnight.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Why today's athletes are struggling with self-belief more than ever
    • Why training your mind is just as important as training your body
    • How one mistake, bad game, or coach's decision can quickly impact an athlete's confidence
    • Jeff's personal story of overcoming adversity and believing he could become a professional goalie
    • Why self-belief can't be measured by a coach, scout, teammate, or anyone else
    • How doing hard things and practicing with intention builds confidence
    • Why athletes need to understand their strengths and areas for improvement
    • How to turn long-term goals into short-term goals and daily practice habits
    • Why parents need to focus on their athlete's goals—not their own
    • How surrounding yourself with like-minded, driven people can influence your mindset
    • Why instant gratification can make long-term athletic development more difficult
    • How small successes can create momentum and make athletes hungrier to improve
    • Why success isn't defined by playing college or professional sports
    • What it really means to reach your personal peak potential
    • How the Dialed & Driven Success Formula helps athletes train their mentality
    • The vision behind Dialed & Driven and the goal of reaching 50,000 youth athletes

    AND SO MUCH MORE!

If you're an athlete who has struggled with confidence, a parent trying to support your child's development, or a coach looking for ways to help athletes become more mentally resilient, this episode is for you.

    You can't control every result.

    You can't eliminate every mistake.

You can't guarantee where your athletic journey will take you.

But you can control the work you put in, the goals you set, and the belief you build along the way.

Because success isn't about guaranteeing that you'll become a professional athlete.

Success is leaving no stone unturned in your development to reach your personal peak potential.

  • Cooper Black: Charlotte Checkers Goaltender on the Power of Self-Belief
    2026/08/04
Welcome to Episode 81 of the Dialed & Driven Mentality Podcast!

Up next in The Goalie Nation Series, Jeff Lerg and Natalie Ferenc sit down with one of the fastest-rising young goaltenders in professional hockey, Charlotte Checkers goaltender Cooper Black.

Standing 6'9" and coming from the small hockey town of Alpena, Michigan, Cooper's journey is anything but conventional. From playing house hockey and AA, leaving home at 14 to chase AAA, returning to high school hockey, getting cut from multiple junior teams, and nearly walking away from the game altogether, his story is a powerful reminder that there is no single path to success.

Now entering his fourth professional season after signing with the Florida Panthers organization out of Dartmouth College, Cooper shares how resilience, patience, and an unwavering belief in himself helped him overcome rejection after rejection while continuing to chase his NHL dream.

Throughout the conversation, Cooper explains why adversity became his greatest motivator, how learning to trust the process transformed both his game and mindset, and why developing the mental side of hockey has become the biggest separator at the professional level.

He also gives listeners an inside look at the realities of junior hockey, Division I college hockey, and life in the American Hockey League, while sharing what it's really like competing every day with one goal in mind: earning an opportunity to play in the NHL.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Growing up in Alpena, Michigan, and taking an unconventional path to professional hockey

    • Why returning from AAA to high school hockey didn't end his hockey dreams

    • Nearly quitting hockey after his junior year—and what changed everything

    • Getting cut from multiple junior teams before finally earning an opportunity

    • Using rejection as fuel instead of letting it define you

    • The importance of loving the game through every setback

    • Choosing Dartmouth for both hockey and academics—and how his mindset evolved once he arrived

    • Transitioning from college hockey into the business of professional hockey

    • What surprised him most during his first days as a pro

    • Why the mental side of the game becomes even more important at the AHL level

    • Learning to trust preparation instead of overthinking during games

    • Why patience is one of the most important qualities for developing athletes

    • How confidence is built through consistent work—not outside opinions

    • Why every athlete's journey looks different, and why that's exactly how it's supposed to be

    AND SO MUCH MORE!

Whether you're a goalie, athlete, coach, or parent, this episode is filled with valuable lessons on perseverance, patience, confidence, and trusting your own path—even when it doesn't look like everyone else's.

Cooper's story proves that setbacks don't determine your future. Being cut, overlooked, or doubted doesn't mean your journey is over. If you're willing to keep showing up, keep learning, and keep believing in yourself, your biggest opportunities may still be ahead.
