  • Are You Making Yourself Indispensable—or Replaceable? with Lara Hamilton
    2026/11/03

    SUMMARY

Being indispensable sounds like a compliment. You're the person everyone depends on, the one who knows how everything works, and the one everyone calls when something goes wrong.

But what happens when being indispensable becomes the very thing preventing you—or your organization—from growing?

And as AI and automation change how work gets done, what happens when sharing your knowledge could make your current position less necessary?

In this episode of Deals with Heels, Debra Bowers welcomes Lara Hamilton, Director of IT Services at Help Desk Realty, for a conversation about leadership, organizational dependency, employee development, and the changing relationship between job security and professional value.

Lara's leadership philosophy is simple but challenging: Work yourself out of a job.

She discovered its value early in her technology career when she improved a manual banking process so successfully that she eliminated the need for her own position. Instead of ending her career, that accomplishment opened the door to new opportunities.

Today, with more than 15 years of experience in technology, operations, and compliance, Lara leads a team supporting more than 1,400 property management users.

Together, Debra and Lara explore why holding onto knowledge can limit growth, how leaders create opportunities by developing others, and what employees can do when technology changes the work they've built their careers around.

    KEY TOPICS

    • The difference between being necessary and being valuable
    • Why becoming indispensable can limit career advancement
    • How organizational dependency creates business risk
    • The fear employees experience when asked to automate their own work
    • Why sharing knowledge and developing others creates room for growth
    • How founders and leaders become trapped by their own responsibilities
    • The connection between employee empowerment and customer experience
    • Why psychological safety matters during organizational change
    • How AI and automation are changing professional value
    • Protecting company information when adopting AI

    A QUESTION WORTH CONSIDERING

If your organization could operate successfully without everything depending on you, what new opportunities might that create?

And if you're leading others, are you developing people who can grow beyond the roles they're in today?

  • The Hidden Credentials That Make You a Leader with Dr. Mickey Fitch-Collins
    2026/10/27

    SUMMARY

What if some of your most valuable leadership credentials never appeared on your résumé?

We tend to measure leadership experience through job titles, degrees, promotions, and positions of authority. But many of the capabilities that make us effective leaders develop long before we receive formal recognition for them.

In this episode of Deals with Heels, Debra Bowers welcomes Dr. Mickey Fitch-Collins, leadership facilitator, educator, speaker, and host of the Learn It Lounge podcast, for a fascinating conversation about hidden credentials, transferable skills, and recognizing the value of our accumulated experiences.

At just 14 years old, Mickey was a professional bass fisherman, teaching rooms filled with adults who were often two or three times her age. What began as a childhood passion developed into public speaking, storytelling, marketing, teaching, and leadership skills that would influence her entire career.

Mickey eventually earned a PhD in leadership in higher education and spent nearly two decades working in higher education administration, including executive leadership. But after reaching the C-suite, she discovered that professional success and personal fulfillment aren't necessarily the same thing.

Her decision to leave higher education and pursue learning and development required her to recognize the transferable skills she'd been building throughout her life.

Together, Debra and Mickey explore why we often overlook our own capabilities, how storytelling helps us communicate our experience, and why understanding what energizes us can be more valuable than simply pursuing the next title.

Sometimes the credential you're missing isn't one you need to earn. It's one you haven't learned to recognize.
