  • Remembrance Day 2026: The Sinking of the SS Caribou
    2026/11/02
Episode 444: On October 14, 1942, the German submarine U-69 torpedoed the passenger ferry SS Caribou in the Cabot Strait, roughly 25 miles off Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. The ferry sank in minutes. Of 237 aboard, 137 died — the largest single loss of life in Canadian-controlled waters during the Second World War, and part of the Battle of the St. Lawrence, the only WWII campaign fought inside North America. Among the dead was Nursing Sister Agnes Wilkie, the only Canadian nursing sister killed by direct enemy action in the entire war; her friend and fellow RCN nursing sister, Margaret Brooke, survived the sinking and was later named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her efforts to save her. 2026/11/02
February 1, 2003. After 16 days in orbit, Space Shuttle Columbia was heading home. Families waited. NASA prepared for landing. Seven astronauts were just minutes from returning to Earth. Then, high above Texas, disaster struck. In this episode of Day of Disaster, Mike Browne reconstructs Columbia’s final moments, tracing the chain of events that began at launch and examining the warnings, decisions, and failures that led to the loss of seven lives. A mission that appeared to be going according to plan became one of the darkest days in space exploration. Because sometimes, the greatest disaster begins long before anyone knows it’s coming.

  • Day of Disaster - Bhopal: The Last Breath Before Dawn
    2026/11/02
December 2, 1984. As night fell over the Indian city of Bhopal, families settled in for the evening. Children slept. Streets grew quiet. But inside a pesticide factory, a chain of failures was about to unleash a catastrophe. A toxic cloud of methyl isocyanate gas escaped from the Union Carbide plant, spreading across the city as thousands slept. People woke choking, blinded and struggling to escape. Thousands would die in the immediate aftermath, with many more suffering lasting consequences. In this episode of Day of Disaster, we reconstruct the hours leading up to the gas leak, examining the warnings, safety failures, and decisions that turned an industrial accident into one of the world's deadliest disasters.
