  • 76 Winner of the 2025 WVA Animal Welfare Award – Learning from Mangala Gunatilake

    We are broadcasting this warm interview again from Washington D.C., where the award ceremony of the WVA (World Veterinary Association) conference & AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) Convention has just taken place. Our guest, Professor Mangala Gunatilake, has introduced laboratory animal science education to Sri Lanka to promote animal welfare and the ethical use of animals in the country and beyond. In recognition of her outstanding achievements, the WVA has awarded her in Animal Welfare this this year. Mangala is the Founder President of both the Sri Lanka Association of Laboratory Animal Science (SLALAS) and the Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing (SAAT SL). Moreover, she has pioneered immunogenicity studies in canines and accelerates the research work on elephants. Listen to us and read further here:

Kate is a pioneer in shelter veterinary medicine who has improved the lives of animals through innovative thinking, evidence-based approaches, and not least her tireless passion for our four-legged friends. For her great achievements in advancing animal welfare in shelter medicine, she was awarded by the AVMA in Animal Welfare this year.   • 74 Qualzucht - Wenn “Schönheit” Leiden schafft

    Was bedeutet eigentlich Tierschutz im Alltag – und was, wenn Tierliebe ins Gegenteil umschlägt? In dieser Folge sprechen wir mit Julia Stubenbord, der Landestierschutzbeauftragten von Baden-Württemberg, über das hochaktuelle und emotional aufgeladene Thema Qualzucht.

    Gemeinsam gehen wir unter anderem folgenden Fragen auf den Grund:

    • Was genau versteht man unter „Qualzucht“ – und betrifft das nur Hunde mit kurzer Schnauze?
    • Welche Tierarten sind besonders betroffen, welche werden oft übersehen?
    • Welche Leiden erleben diese Tiere täglich – körperlich wie auch sozial?
    • Warum werden solche Tiere überhaupt gezüchtet – und wer trägt Verantwortung?
    • Welche Rolle spielen Social Media, Werbung und Influencer:innen in der Popularisierung dieser Rassen?
    • Was sagt das deutsche Tierschutzgesetz zu Qualzuchten – und wie gut wird das tatsächlich durchgesetzt?

    Außerdem werfen wir einen Blick in die tierärztliche Praxis, sprechen über ethische Dilemmata, Aufklärungsinitiativen und den aktuellen Stand im tiermedizinischen Studium. Julia Stubenborn teilt dabei nicht nur ihre fachliche Expertise, sondern auch ihre ganz persönliche Haltung zu einem Thema, das dringend mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdient.
