The Spiritual Thermometer (When Love Grows Cold)
The love Jesus speaks of is agape—selfless, divine, sacrificial love, both toward God and toward neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39). This love is not meant to be extinguished, but it can be chilled, moving from a fiery passion to cold apathy. This cooling doesn't happen overnight; it is a gradual process caused by prolonged exposure to the chill of sin, conflict, and focusing on the failures of the world instead of the faithfulness of God. It manifests as a loss of joy, resentment toward service, and a willingness to compromise on truth or compassion.
Reflection Questions:
- How do I measure the "temperature" of my love for God? (E.g., consistency in prayer, desire to read Scripture, willingness to forgive.)
- How does a cold heart affect my relationships with others? Do I find myself easily irritated, judgmental, or unwilling to extend grace?
- Name one area of my spiritual life that feels "lukewarm" right now, and ask God to reignite it.
