• Benjamin W. Morse Interview - We Are Scarlet Twilight: Cobalt Crisis
    2025/05/06
Ben Morse joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner today to talk about Ben's newest Kickstarter campaign for COBALT CRISIS, as Ben tackles creating his own crossover event. If you aren't familiar with the world of We Are Scarlet Twilight, it's Ben's take on Golden Age Superheroes, but with a more modern sensibility and a city setting that looks heavily influenced by Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927). This is a really great conversation that covers a lot of ground about comics, superheroes, crossover/crisis events, and, not surprisingly, Fritz Lang. This can be a great jumping on point if you haven't checked out We Are Scarlet Twilight. You can catch up and be ready to dive headfirst into the Cobalt Crisis! • Kit Anderson Interview - Second Shift & Safer Places
    2025/05/02
I’ve been thinking of stories as transportation lines recently, maybe that’s because I’ve been trying to catch up on some older Star Trek episodes lately and thinking about how transporters work too much, but there’s something fascinating about that idea of being transported from the physical space in which you reside and into the one fabricated in your mind especially when someone builds some entertaining scaffolding for you in a narrative. Now the special ones, they pull a magic trick and get you trapped in between those two worlds. I believe the bougie term is a liminal space, but those stories possess a certain something that makes them legendary. I’m thinking the wardrobe in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Luke Skywalker training in the swamp on Dagobah, or anything really from David Lynch. I absolutely love these types of stories, so it is my pleasure to host cartoonist Kit Anderson on the show with me today who knows a thing or two about playing in liminal spaces. Kit is an Ignatz Award Nominee and the creator behind one of my favorite books of last year, Safer Places, which I have continually raved about, and she has new graphic novel called Second Shift dropping in July from Avery Hill in much the same vein. Safer Places From the publisher From road trips to doctors’ offices to the mysterious spaces under the house, these short stories explore the secrets and magic typically unseen in everyday life. A walk through the forest, a family move, a day in a normal life—Anderson’s depictions of these ordinary moments transform them with a double-take, revealing the strangeness, surreality, and transformation within. With powerful and personal emotional writing and art, thoughtfully combining magic and life as we all know it—these stories establish Kit Anderson as a presence in short comics-format fiction. Second Shift From the publisher The future. AI and algorithmic influence has become prevalent. Humans are groomed to be usefully applied by the megacorporations that control Earth. Some “choose” to work on new colonies off-world. Most of the time they spend as “Drop-Ins,” suspended in a digital environment. They live out intricate artificial lives, are entertained, socialise with AIs, and undergo occupational training. Until they are woken… Alone on a TERRACORP outpost, Birdie Doran and a few other employees serve on isolated shifts processing comets and asteroids for terraforming. When Birdie discovers a second station, abandoned and strange, she starts to see what her job--her life--really is. Ignatz Award-nominated author Kit Anderson presents a psychological science fiction exploration of the lines between reality inside and outside the mind. • Gerry Duggan and Scott Buoncristiano Interview - The Dark Room
    2025/04/25
Last time Gerry Duggan was on the show, we were talking about his photography project Timing/Luck and ironically what made me a fan of his work isn't The X-Men or any other of the of great titles and characters he's penned and developed over the years, what made me fall in love with it was a breakdancing skeleton named Walt. You might be asking yourself why that may be. A few years ago I lost one of my best friends to a motorcycle accident and at the time while processing the grief as best I could, Walt dropped in the pages of The Dark Room, a book Gerry cooked up with the uber talented Magic Johnson of comics Scott Buoncristiano. Walt's energy was a mirror image of my friend Tommy's, and it turns out The Dark Room was a project centered around the loss of one of Gerry and Scott's mutual friends so this project has been one of dealing with grief through comedy, and I'm forever grateful to them both for being willing to share that vulnerability with the world. This series will go down as one of my favorite of all time and it was a pleasure to get a chance to pick Gerry and Scott's brains about some of the motivations behind it in advance of the second volume being released later this year. Gerry on BlueSky Scott's website The Dark Room Volume 2 from Image Comics From the publisher Gerry Duggan (X-Men & Uncanny Avengers) rejoins your favorite artists Scott & Tamra for the anticipated return of your favorite fantasy/horror/comedy series! Dounia, her ex, a werewolf, and her pal Walt, an incandescent blue skeleton, are joined by a mysterious psionicist fresh from a terrible prison. This time the world is threatened by a powerful old Necromancer that’s resurrecting the dead from Finland’s Winter War. More curses, more threats, zombies, wizards, cursed objects and the threat of the war to finally end mankind. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. • Zach Howard and Clara Meath Interview - Moonshine Bigfoot
    2025/04/23
I've got a family history with moonshine. It started when I was a little kid riding around on my grandfather's tractor. He always had a half gallon Mayfield milk jug full of something or other he'd periodically take a swig from and, yes, more often than not the later on in the day it got, the more likely we were to end up in a ditch but that was all part of the fun of our time together. Later I learned he was a part of the illicit trade selling homebrew supplies out the back of his grocery store and was investigated by the AFT, the revenuers to us. We've got a locally famous peach brandy recipe made with a touch of molasses, ok maybe more than a touch. So, you couple that with the fact that I'm the Editor-In-Chief of Comic Book Yeti where we are all about those cryptids and it felt like a no brainer to reach out to the creative team of the new Image Comics series Moonshine Bigfoot. I wrangled industry vet Zach Howard and his protégé Clara Meath on with me to hear all about it. I've been trying to cover more comedy comics projects lately, and this is by far one of the best I've seen in some time. I adore this book. Where else is a bigfoot the normal guy as he navigates aliens, clandestine Illuminati, cryptid hunters, and drunken Smerfs hangining out in a bar with Fantasy Island's Tattoo. You read that right. Make sure to snag yourself a copy of this southern fried gem of a book. Zach Howard's website Clara Meath's website Moonshine Bigfoot From the publisher Buzzard County, 1981—Moonshine Bigfoot spends his days making a living while outwitting clueless cops, reckless rivals, and buffoonish Bigfoot Hunters. All is hunky-dory until he draws the attention of an Illuminati-esque cabal. With his partner in life and crime, Amethyst, our hairy hero is about to learn that some problems can’t be handled just by jumping them in a souped-up Mach 1. • Johanna Taylor Interview - The Ghostkeeper
    2025/04/22
Johanna Taylor joins Jimmy on the podcast today to talk about The Ghostkeeper, her original graphic novel that came out in July 2024. Jimmy loved the premise of The Ghostkeeper so much he had to chat with Johanna about it. Now that he's read it and recorded the podcast he's been more devoted than ever around the Yeti Cave to convert others to readers. Johanna is an illustrator and artist with a BFA in animation. She discusses the story and art of The Ghostkeeper, the influence of Oscar Wilde, and finding inspiration as she travels. Jimmy and Johanna discuss some of the important themes of The Ghostkeeper, including dealing with loss and grief, burnout, taking on too much and feeling like you can't ask for help, the importance of caring for your mental health. They discuss all of this within the context of Johanna's beautiful art style. This is a wonderful conversation about a phenomenal graphic novel. The Ghostkeeper has also recently been translated into French AND Johanna was accepted to the Chateau Orqueveaux artist residency! She will be in France the end of April until mid-May. She'll be a guest at the Rayon Vert Comic Festival, and will have book signings in Chaumont, Nancy, and Paris. So if we have any French listeners, be on the lookout for Johanna! Buy The Ghostkeeper here: https://theghostkeeper.carrd.co/ Check out Johanna's website: https://www.johannamation.com/ Follow Johanna on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/johannamation.bsky.social Here is how the publisher describes The Ghostkeeper: Dorian Leith can see ghosts. Not only that, he listens to their problems and tries to help them move on to the afterlife. It’s a gift that’s made him an outcast to everyone in town. That is except for his dearly departed grandmother, who he’s partnered with to turn this paranormal ability into an honest living, and the local bookshop owner, who seems to be the only non-deceased person willing to give him a chance. But it’s all worth it to Dorian, who feels like he’s been given a bigger purpose. A chance to save those who cannot save themselves. Then one day, the key to Death’s Door is stolen, trapping all the ghosts in the land of the living. Since he’s only one who can see them, the spirits rely on Dorian to retrieve the key before it is too late. If they can’t move on, they’ll soon be consumed by a ghostly rot that has begun to plague them. As it continues to fester and spread, and the ghosts become desperate for relief, Dorian must do whatever it takes to find a way to bring peace to the restless dead—even if that peace comes at the cost of his own…. THE GHOSTKEEPER's content is suitable for readers aged 12 and up. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. • Alice Darrow Interview - Tramps of the Apocalypse
    2025/04/18
Sometimes you just need a good diversion to distract you from the dumpster fire that is modern life and few things can immediately take you on the emotional rollercoaster like a good satirical dystopian narrative so I've got first time guest Alice Darrow on with me today to help me break down what is the surprise comic book of 2025 for me, Tramps of the Apocalypse. Sitting somewhere between Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Idiocracy, this is a hilarious dressing down of the modern manosphere through the lens of three damsels causing much distress in 2094 in a world ruled by Quest Ragnor, King Of Males as terrible dudes seek to do what terrible dudes would do in a scenario such as this. Do yourself a favor and make sure to put it on your radar. Tramps of the Apocalypse from Dark Horse Comics From the publisher The year is 2094, and men rule the world. So what has changed in seventy years, you ask? Following the ten-year Sildenafil wars of 2053, Earth has become a barren wasteland. Factions of surviving men led by “Quest Ragnor, King of Males” have taken over the remnants of cities and towns across the globe, capturing and enslaving all women…Well, all women except for three super bimbos with unparalleled bloodlust and an unquenchable thirst for violence: Baby, Belladonna, and Babette. Unwilling to bend to the whims and desires of the buffoons in charge, too slippery to be caught, and too sexy for chains, these three bangin’ babes are at the top of Quest Ragnor’s most wanted list. Unfortunately for him, they couldn’t care less. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3.
