He says goodnight.

Then he doesn't leave.

"Do you have five minutes?"

Five minutes has never existed before. Everything they've shared belongs to the corridor. This is something else.

"Walk with me?"

No explanation. No romance. He just starts walking.

Episode M. Walk.

Some invitations change things long before anyone answers them.

2:17 comes.

Daniel doesn't.

Nothing is wrong. The work is real. The cases arrive and she reads them and makes her notations and the floor runs exactly as it should.

But the night feels different.

Not lonely.

Incomplete.

She has a story in her pocket with nowhere to go.

Episode L. Missing.

There's a difference between lonely and incomplete.

She just didn't know it until tonight.

Something small happens at 10:30 PM.

A resident says something ridiculous. Lucy's immediate thought -- before she's finished having it -- is: I'll tell Daniel later.

She stops.

She has never saved a story for anyone before.

Not consciously. Not intentionally.

But now she has one in her pocket, and four hours until 2:17, and a quiet understanding that her night has started organizing itself around a conversation that hasn't happened yet.

Episode K. Keeping.

Intimacy doesn't begin with big conversations.

It begins the first time something happens and you already know who you're going to tell.

He leaves.

Then comes back.

That has never happened before.

He has a question. Something about laminated cards, of all things. Something wonderfully ordinary that the audience will understand immediately, and Lucy will understand immediately, and neither of them will say anything about.

He could have kept walking.

He didn't.

Episode J. Choice.

There comes a point where obligation ends.

And someone stays anyway.

Nothing unusual happens tonight.

No maintenance. No disruption. No crisis. No almost-confession.

Just an unusually quiet shift, a case that ends before the conversation does, and two people who forget to notice what time it is.

The coffee goes cold.

That has never happened before.

Episode I. Ease.

Their conversations have always been exactly the length of a cup of coffee.

Tonight they weren't.

The corridor is back.

The window. The counter. The coffee in its usual place. Everything exactly as it always was.

Except now she knows the corridor wasn't why he came.

So she makes the coffee anyway. Puts the second cup in its place. Looks at it.

She doesn't have an answer for that yet.

Episode H. Language.

The words still work.

They just don't cover what's underneath anymore.

The imaging corridor closes for overnight maintenance.

No window. No counter. No station. No 2:17.

Lucy gets relocated to a temporary workstation on a different floor. She makes the coffee anyway, out of habit, and then looks at it and doesn't know what to do with it.

At approximately 2:17, someone comes looking for her.

Not because of the corridor.

Episode G. Pressure.

Some things exist because of the container.

Tonight they found out this isn't one of those things.

She finds out his first name.

Not from him.

A nurse comes through at 2:17 -- the first time anyone else has ever been there at that time -- and says it like it's nothing. Like it's just his name. Because to her, it is.

To Lucy, it's the word that exists on the other side of "Dr. Okafor." A word she has no right to. A word she's not supposed to want.

And later that night, she almost says it.

Turns out it goes both ways.
