When an insulated Western audience remains fundamentally blind to the baseline terrors of wartime survival, this installation ceases to function as a bridge of genuine empathy and instead collapses into a localized myth. Deprived of real-world context, the viewer's mind automatically reduces the authentic trauma of these Ukrainian survivors into digestible, cinematic archetypes, confusing the dramatic high-contrast editing with historical truth. The artwork is stripped of its revolutionary danger and transformed into a domesticated aesthetic commodity-a moral absolution machine where privileged observers can consume a polished simulation of suffering, congratulate themselves on feeling a fleeting moment of pity, and walk back out into their secure reality completely insulated from the dark, untranslatable truth hanging under the gallery spotlight.

There is no bridge between the drywall of a gallery and the wooden bar of an Irish pub on the Ukrainian front line. There is no “fine-tuning” that can translate the sound of a mortar round into the language of a budget meeting or a latte order. Sanitizing the struggle is wrong. Sweetener is wrong. Take it straight. Black. Reality is the constant “hum” of non-existence. But it is the only reality from which art can be born. In war, the mask is no longer a luxury. To express “unexplained” is the only fucking fortune of war.

“In 2026, I surrendered the logistics of my post-documentary project to an AI algorithm. It sent me directly into a war zone. It mapped routes, wrote administrative correspondence, and drafted institutional pitches. My guiding theory was based on a simple truth: As war became mechanized, war reportage mechanized with the analog camera; when it digitized, reportage followed suit; and now, as war becomes automated, the documentation process must mirror that progression. I wrestled with its clinical metrics, but was resolved to follow its every logistical directive, even as it failed time and time again, catastrophically — hallucinating data that left me financially isolated and physically vulnerable on the Ukrainian frontline. My project, THE MACHINE & MEDIUM OF WAR, is not just about a geopolitical front; it is an unassailable archive of biological empathy and resilience under algorithmic siege, struggling to capture the face of human trauma, a project the algorithm itself deemed an ultimate, though necessary, failure. In 2018, documentary photographer Cory Zimmerman first encountered the migrant caravans as they arrived at a makeshift migrant camp set up on a soccer field in the heart of Mexico City.

Between a Sword & a Wall is both a visual record and a personal reflection on that journey, which took me north to the US border, but south, following the trail to the origin: Central America, and the highlands of Guatemala.

Central America’s Northern Triangle—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—is among the deadliest regions on earth. Since the 1980s, 85% of Central American immigrants arriving at the US southern border have come from this area. The region is plagued by violent conflicts, systemic corruption, economic disparities, and environmental crises, all of which have fueled massive migration north, particularly since late 2018, as asylum requests skyrocketed. People flee not just violence—personal and direct—but also extreme poverty and starvation, driven by political instability and climate change. US asylum officers’ credible fear screenings found that 82% of women from the Northern Triangle had “a significant possibility of establishing eligibility for asylum or protection under the UN Convention Against Torture Act.” At least half of migrants are asylum-seeking refugees, many unaccompanied minors. The UN estimates over 1.7 million internally displaced people in the region, with thousands more embarking on dangerous journeys north each year, escaping gangs, cartels, and state fragility.
