Thomas raised two related difficulties with the Mass: what the Catholic Church actually claims is happening on the altar, and how underwhelming or casual many ordinary parish celebrations can feel. In this episode Greg stays focused on the first question. Drawing on Scripture, the early Church, and the Church’s precise language of transubstantiation, he explains why Catholics insist that the whole Christ — body, blood, soul, and divinity — is truly present under the appearances of bread and wine. He contrasts this with the more limited role communion usually plays in evangelical Protestantism and shows why the Church has always treated the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Christian life. The gap between the extraordinary claim and everyday parish practice is real, but it is a separate question for another time.
