概要

It's been said that in two thousand years, Americans will be remembered for three things - the Constitution, baseball, and jazz music. We would like to suggest a fourth cultural touchstone: comics.

Welcome to Comics: An American History! This is a podcast that doesn't just look at the history of comic books, superheroes, and whether DC or Marvel is the bigger force in the comic world but also at the American history that existed during the making of the medium. What we hope to show is how pop culture is reflected in our society based on the history of the time and how we can use comics to better understand our social, political, or economic moments in American history.

Hosted by Sami Jarroush, a Chicago based U.S. history teacher and regular contributor on the History channel, and Terry Gant, the owner of the Chicago based comic book shop Third Coast Comics, this dynamic duo will dive into the depths of how your favorite comics and comic book characters were created and why the historical conditions of the time period shaped and inspired them.

  • What's the (New) Deal with Superman?
    2026/10/27

Before Superman was known as the Man of Steel, his creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster called him the Champion of the Oppressed. Because when Superman made his debut in April of 1938 in Action Comics #1, the United States was still in the grip of the Great Depression.

On this episode, Sami and Terry discuss the creative history of Superman, what led America to enter into its longest economic downturn, and why its more difficult for the Last Son of Krypton to perform his kind of heroics from 1938 in today's America.
