  • Bonus Episode: Mental Health Amongst Wildland Firefighters
    2025/06/23
I know in this episode I said I would post it after we released episode 45, but it was such a joy to meet such an inspirational individual that I hope all of our listeners get as much out of this episode as I did recording it. ------------ There are many jobs that deserve higher recognition than they are given, from nursing, to teaching, to safety personnel, all designed to better our society. In the world of wildland firefighting, their job is to save lives while also preserving the environment at the cost of their own protection. In this Bonus Episode (one of many that will be released over the next several months), I talk with Lea Bossler, wildland firefighter and mental health advocate as she walks me through the unknown ‘extreme-ness’ of wildland firefighting in America. From poor healthcare to mental and physical conditions that well exceed a 9-5 job, she explains in beautiful clarity what this profession means to her and those of her colleagues invested in ‘the mission’. This calling attracts many people with ADHD, which can be linked to trauma, but at the same time provides a community and brotherhood, whose bonds cannot be broken. To learn more about Lea’s work, I highly suggestion reading her article available through Mystery Ranch called ‘What happens with your world ends?’ https://www.mysteryranch.com/backbone-lea-bossler?srsltid=AfmBOoqwutpaqbtJb13RTiq_ALSV1nLe14VoQLimF0Biaf2Hn4ei24JR Also, please consider supporting the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which supports Wildland firefighters and their families when tragedies strike: https://wffoundation.org/ And finally, while I do mention that this is the second to last of our podcast episodes, in an ideal world we would love to do more. But to do so, we need your support. If you could follow us on Apple and Spotify and write a review, we would greatly appreciate it. #coffeeandcocktailspodcast #wildlandfirefighting #mentalhealth #mysteryranch #wff

  • Ep. 44: Climate Change and the Bengal Delta
    2024/10/03
‘Climate change’ according to Dr Camelia Dewan, is used as a term to attract donor funding, but to what extent does this funding actually help those in need? In this fascinating episode on the Bengal Delta, we take a deep dive into the world of NGOs and explore how short-term projects in the development industry can have a negative effect on the communities most effected by infrastructure intervention. With microcredits known for their high interest rates, the repayment for these is very high, which can result in social stigmas (and the marrying off of daughters) for the poorest of women who are unable to repay their weekly debts. To learn more, check out Dr Dewan’s book on ‘Misreading the Bengal Delta'.

  • Ep. 43: Workplace Taboos- Breastfeeding and Menstruation
    2024/01/11
‘Bodily functions’ are not normally brought into discussions meant for the general public. But what happens when those ‘functions’ take place in the workplace and/or around one’s working environment? In this episode with Dr Chiara Cocco, we discuss taboo topics like ‘menstruation’ and ‘breastfeeding’ and why these basic, normal aspects of the reproductive process can be seen as disruptive to the workplace. With some companies offering policies like ‘period leave’ for those with more serious biological conditions, the shame, disgust and concealment associated with periods means that some employees suffer in silence. This is made that much more difficult when some female employees are less sympathetic to those colleagues who are struggling. If you have found yourself in a similar position, feel free to leave a comment below or write us directly if you would like to share your story so that others know that they are not alone.
