The sky over Coal City, Illinois, turned an unnatural green on the evening of June 22, 2015. This episode follows the supercell that radar in Romeoville tracked across Grundy County, the hook echo that tightened at 8:28 PM, and the tornado that struck the town just after sunset. The National Weather Service later determined winds reached 150 miles per hour, an EF3, with a damage path up to six hundred yards wide. The reconstruction covers the twelve minutes the tornado spent on the ground, beginning in a farm field near the intersection of County Road 1000 and County Road 2000 southwest of town, and the survey work that made the EF3 rating official by two o'clock the following afternoon. It also examines what protected residents that night, including a safe room engineered to withstand winds of 250 miles per hour, and what the storm revealed about surviving a violent tornado in the dark.
