  • Does Policygenius Actually Beat a Local Agent? (Field Test Results)
    2026/10/14

When your home and auto insurance rates jump at renewal, can a platform like Policygenius actually beat the price of a local independent or captive agent?

In this episode of CleverDime, we break down the results of a head-to-head field test using identical coverage limits across Policygenius, local independent brokers, and captive carriers like State Farm and Farmers. We dig into the realities of the shopping process, from the hidden time commitment of "finishing up with an agent" to the truth behind filed insurance rates and why online aggregators don't possess a magic discount wand.

    Key takeaways covered:

    • Why Policygenius required an hour on the phone versus 10-minute calls with local agents

    • How regional carrier availability and multi-state licensing impact your choices.

    • The reason why standard carrier premiums (like Progressive) do not get discounted online

    • Why captive agencies (State Farm, Farmers) still matter in rate discovery

    • How to leverage your current Policy Declarations page to avoid coverage gaps when shopping

Next week, we test Insurify against local agent quotes to measure pricing and time efficiency.

  • Can Online Comparison Sites Beat a Local Insurance Agent? I Tested 7 to Find Out
    2026/10/06

When my auto and home insurance rates spiked, I ran an unbiased experiment to answer one core question: Can digital comparison tools beat a traditional local agent on price, speed, and coverage?

I took my actual policy declarations and put them through seven major online comparison platforms Policygenius, Matic, Credit Karma, Compare.com, Jerry, Insurify, and The Zebra. I compared those results to a local independent agent representing national carriers (Progressive, Geico, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide), as well as direct quotes from State Farm and Farmers.

In this episode, we break down:

    • The Myth of the "Universal Tool": Why a true "Kayak of insurance" doesn't exist.

    • The Hidden Labor: How most comparison tools pass you off to carrier sites to re-enter data from scratch.

    • Coverage Stripping: Why initial online estimates appear low until you discover stripped endorsements and jacked-up deductibles.

    • The Phone Call Catch: Which platforms (like Matic and Policygenius) still require human agents and up to an hour of your time.

    • When Digital Tools Make Sense: Why apps like Jerry have a practical place if you want or need to avoid phone calls.

    • Direct-to-Consumer Options (Kin): Regional players might surface on aggregators, and you don't need a comparison site to get a quote from them.

    • The Efficient Shopping Strategy: How to shop thoroughly without wasting hours on redundant platforms.

  • The Hidden Trap of Insurance Roadside Assistance (feat. Ex-Insurance and AAA Insider)
    2026/09/09

Most drivers add roadside assistance to their auto insurance policy without reading the fine print because it only costs a couple of bucks a month. As a former insurance agent and 10-year veteran of AAA group sales, I can tell you that convenience comes with a hidden cost: the CLUE claims report trap.

In this episode, we break down the 4 main ways you can get roadside help: Manufacturer Warranties, Auto Insurance, Standalone Clubs like AAA and Good Sam, and App-Based alternatives. We cover the pros, the cons, the fine print, and how to choose the right coverage before you're stranded on the side of the highway.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Why manufacturer roadside plans tie you to the VIN (and the nearest dealership).
    • How frequent insurance roadside calls can negatively affect your claims history.
    • The major flexibility perks of member-based clubs like AAA and Good Sam.
    • When it actually makes sense to keep it cheap vs. when you need a standalone membership.

  • Why Adding a Driver on Your Auto Insurance Might Actually Save You Money
    2026/09/02

Discover the counterintuitive auto insurance rule that could cost you hundreds of dollars every year - or leave you completely unprotected after an accident. Most people assume that adding another licensed driver to your household insurance policy automatically increases your rate. But as a former insurance agent, I learned firsthand why that common assumption can sometimes backfire. In this episode of CleverDime, we break down how household driver disclosures work, why excluding a spouse or roommate can backfire on your pricing and your coverage, and why checking both scenarios can put money back in your pocket.

Topics covered: auto insurance rates, household driver rules, excluded drivers, car insurance pricing myths, and how to save money on car insurance without risking a denied claim.

  • Rideshare, Delivery & Business Use: The Hidden Car Insurance Coverage Gaps
    2026/08/26

Before becoming an insurance agent, I assumed that paying my monthly auto insurance premium meant I was covered no matter what.

    Turns out, that’s not true.

If you only drive to work, run errands, and take road trips, your policy is likely fine. But if you drive for a ride share company, deliver food or packages or goods, visit clients for work, or run a weekend side hustle out of your vehicle, you may be driving without coverage.

In this episode we break down:

    • The gap between your personal policy and rideshare coverage

    • Why food/package delivery is rated differently than passenger rides

    • Commute vs. Pleasure vs. Business classifications (and why agents get it wrong)

    • When a side hustle requires a commercial policy vs. a simple endorsement

    • The 5-minute phone call to protect yourself from a denied claim

  • Who's Insurance Pays When You Borrow or Loan a Vehicle?
    2026/08/19

If a friend borrows your car and gets into a wreck, (or if you borrow your friend's car) whose insurance pays? Most drivers believe the driver’s policy covers the damage but in auto insurance, coverage almost always follows the vehicle, not the driver.

In this episode, we break down how "permissive use" really works, why lending your keys puts your deductible and premium rates at risk, and 3 policy traps that can cause a carrier to deny an accident claim.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Permissive Use Explained: What happens when an occasional driver is behind the wheel of your car.

    • The Financial Fallout: Why your liability pays first, your collision fixes the vehicle, and your renewal rates take the hit.

    • 3 Traps That Deny Claims: Unlisted household residents, excluded drivers, and gig work / side hustles (delivery & rideshare).

    • Smarter Alternatives: Practical ways to help friends move or travel without gambling your insurance record or credit.
