Jordan Staal just got a massive one-year contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes — a deal made possible by timing, as the new CBA would’ve blocked this front-loaded structure. Coming off his best season in a decade and a historic playoff run, Staal’s new deal includes a $900K base salary, a $4M signing bonus, and up to $5.1M in performance bonuses. At 37, he became the oldest player ever to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, earning 17 of 21 votes for playoff MVP. GM Eric Tulsky praised Staal not just for his play, but as the heart of the team’s culture and leadership — mentoring younger players like Logan Stankoven and anchoring a “family” atmosphere built on grit. With training camp around the corner, having their captain locked in for two more seasons is a huge boost for the Canes.

Captain Jordan Staal just locked in his future with the Hurricanes on a blockbuster deal that celebrates his stunning playoff run — including a Conn Smythe-winning performance — after years of rebuilding and doubters. Signed right before the new CBA took effect, the deal features a $900K base salary and a massive $4M signing bonus, with up to $5.1M in performance incentives. The timing was strategic: the new CBA caps signing bonuses at 60% of total value, and while front-loading is allowed for one-year deals, the uncertainty around extensions made this move critical. This isn’t just a contract — it’s a statement: Staal is here to lead Carolina back to glory.

The St. Louis Blues are circling Alexander Nikishin, a young, high-impact defenseman from Carolina, as trade rumors heat up with Nikishin himself requesting a move—seeking more ice time and a top-pairing role. With Carolina unwilling to re-sign him and no offer sheet on the table, the Blues could land him for immediate impact on their second pairing and power play, while also giving prospects room to grow. But don’t count out Nashville or Winnipeg—they’re also in the mix, making this a high-stakes, fast-approaching deadline deal.

Alexander Nikishin, the 24-year-old Hurricanes defenseman who helped win the Stanley Cup last season, is seeking a “change of scenery” and remains unsigned as a restricted free agent. Standing 6’3” and packing 218 pounds with a lethal left-handed shot, he’s drawing strong interest from the St. Louis Blues — who desperately need his size and skill — while Nashville and Winnipeg are also in the mix. Fans are stunned he’d want to leave post-championship, suspecting his real motive may be chasing a better contract after an explosive rookie year that netted 33 points. His future could hinge on whether Carolina re-signs him or trades him short-term to St. Louis.

Carolina Hurricanes just won the Stanley Cup, but chaos is brewing as defenseman Alexander Nikishin, a restricted free agent and all-rookie honoree, has officially requested a trade. Rumors suggest his camp is pushing for a move, not just the team. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour made it clear: the Hurricanes won’t wait — they’ll either keep him or move on. With key players like Seth Jarvis rehabbing and Frederik Andersen signing elsewhere, Nikishin’s potential departure could mark the second major loss from their championship roster this offseason. Training camp looms, and the pressure’s on to resolve this before the season starts.
