Jordan Staal just got a massive one-year contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes — a deal made possible by timing, as the new CBA would’ve blocked this front-loaded structure. Coming off his best season in a decade and a historic playoff run, Staal’s new deal includes a $900K base salary, a $4M signing bonus, and up to $5.1M in performance bonuses. At 37, he became the oldest player ever to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, earning 17 of 21 votes for playoff MVP. GM Eric Tulsky praised Staal not just for his play, but as the heart of the team’s culture and leadership — mentoring younger players like Logan Stankoven and anchoring a “family” atmosphere built on grit. With training camp around the corner, having their captain locked in for two more seasons is a huge boost for the Canes.

Captain Jordan Staal just locked in his future with the Hurricanes on a blockbuster deal that celebrates his stunning playoff run — including a Conn Smythe-winning performance — after years of rebuilding and doubters. Signed right before the new CBA took effect, the deal features a $900K base salary and a massive $4M signing bonus, with up to $5.1M in performance incentives. The timing was strategic: the new CBA caps signing bonuses at 60% of total value, and while front-loading is allowed for one-year deals, the uncertainty around extensions made this move critical. This isn’t just a contract — it’s a statement: Staal is here to lead Carolina back to glory.
