  • What Hospice Actually Does (It's Not What You Think)
    2026/09/24
You've cooked her meals, cleaned up after her, even taken her to get her nails done, wait, wrong episode. Here's this one: You think hospice means the last few days of life. So does almost everyone. But that misconception is keeping families from getting support months, even years, before they think they're "ready" for it.This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster sit down with Kelly Garrett from Empath Health to break apart the biggest myths about hospice care. Kelly explains why hospice is a supportive service, not a countdown, and walks through everything from respite care for exhausted caregivers to music therapy, veteran honor programs, and free grief support for anyone who's experienced a loss, hospice patient or not.If you've ever wondered "is it too soon to call hospice" or didn't know the difference between hospice and palliative care, this episode clears it all up.💬 Topics Covered:- Why hospice is so much more than end-of-life care (and why waiting too long means missing out on real support)- What actually qualifies someone for hospice — and why a "six months or less" diagnosis doesn't mean what people assume- The five days of respite care built into the Medicare hospice benefit that most caregivers don't know exists- The real difference between hospice and palliative care, explained simply- Hospice extras most families never use: music therapy, pet therapy, end-of-life doulas, and veteran honor programs- Free grief support programs available to anyone, whether or not their loved one was on hospice- Why asking for help early is one of the most important things a caregiver can do🎙️ Hosted By:Tina Rains, RN CALAMelinda Lee Foster🎙️ Featured Guest:Kelly Garrett — Empath HealthKelly Garrett works with Empath Health, serving families across Florida's west coast — from Marion County down to Fort Myers and over to Palm Beach and Broward — with hospice care, home health, personal care, dementia care services, and the Impact Life Medicaid program that helps people stay safely in their own homes. Kelly is passionate about breaking down the myths and fear around hospice, and about making sure caregivers know they don't have to wait until a crisis to ask for help.📍 24/7 Hospice Hotline: (888) 855-2838📍 Empath Health: empathhealth.org📚 Take the Next Step:This podcast exists to make sure caregivers stop feeling alone in this. • "Mom, Did You Steal My Jewelry?" — Dementia & False Accusations
    2026/09/18

You've cooked her meals, cleaned up after her, even taken her to get her nails done, and then out of nowhere, she accuses you of stealing her jewelry. If you've ever stood there thinking "what is happening right now," this episode is going to explain exactly what's going on in her brain, and why it's not personal.

This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster get into one of the most painful and confusing parts of dementia caregiving: false accusations of theft. They share real stories, from missing wedding photos to rosaries hidden in underwear drawers and break down why dementia causes this, how to respond in the moment without escalating it, and how to protect yourself and any caregiver you hire from getting blamed unfairly.

If your parent has ever accused you (or someone caring for them) of stealing, and you didn't know whether to argue, cry, or just walk away, this episode was made for you.

    💬 Topics Covered:

. Why dementia causes people to believe things are being "stolen" from them
. The real reason arguing or defending yourself only makes it worse
. A simple language technique, validate, partner, redirect — that calms accusations fast
. Why gentle touch can de-escalate a paranoid or agitated moment
. Practical steps to protect a hired caregiver from false theft accusations
. When to suspect something else (UTI, medication, dehydration) is behind sudden new behavior
. How to be proactive instead of reactive before the next accusation happens

  • The Caregiver Needs A Caregiver Too | Tina & Melinda
    2026/09/09

You take care of everyone else's appointments, meds, meals, and meltdowns, but who's checking in on you? If the answer is "no one," or "I don't have time to think about it," this episode is about to name something you've probably felt for a long time and never said out loud.

This week, Tina Rains, RN CALA, and Melinda Lee Foster sit down without a guest for a raw, just-the-two-of-us conversation about the caregiver identity, the one that forgets it's allowed to need care too. They talk honestly about the moments they've each hit a wall, what it actually looks like to ask for help (and why it's so hard), and how to build support into a life that already feels maxed out.

If you're the one everyone calls when something goes wrong, and no one calls to ask how you're doing, this episode was made for you.

    💬 Topics Covered:

Why caregivers are often the last people who ask for help — even from other caregivers
The difference between "coping" and actually being supported
What it looks like to build a support system when you feel like you don't have time for one
Tina and Melinda's own moments of hitting a breaking point
Small ways to let someone else carry part of the load, starting this week
Why asking for help isn't giving up on your role — it's what makes you able to keep showing up
