このコンテンツについて

I'm Brian “Cappy” Cappello — 50% Italian, 99% Irish (I should probably go by Sully). Designed to be THE go-to recoverycast for walks, runs, long drives, and/or congested commutes. We'll talk sobriety, but plenty of life's other 98 problems: ADHD, people-pleasing, perfectionism, self-love, trauma, connection, regrets, forgiveness, authenticity, embracing discomfort & the cringe. Short on backstories, long on witty, educated banter. Whether you're here for saving, or need some braving, this is the pod for you.
I once quit for 3.5 years and am right back in that state w/19+ months of sobriety, going on infinity. Rebirth was: 3/18/24

  • Reframing Sobriety: How joining a recovery community got us motivated to reclaim our lives. With Tommy Stewart
    2025/10/31

Transforming relapse into momentum, building community, and learning to let go of perfectionism. In this first guest episode, Tom joins me to talk candidly about sobriety, slipping on a golf weekend, owning it publicly, and getting right back on the horse. We compare AA vs. online recovery communities (The Luckiest Club, Reframe), talk about meeting cadence and fit, and unpack the “voice” that tries to drag us back to drinking. I also share a personal check-in: Halloween marks three years since my intervention and 19.5 months sober today—proof that it really “takes what it takes.”

    What we cover:

    - Relapse, restarts, and why honesty keeps you sober long-term

    - AA meetings vs. online communities (pros, cons, and finding your people)

    - Surrender vs. “moderation” and the illusion of control

    - Anxiety, the nervous system, and why alcohol makes it worse over time

    - Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and healthy boundaries in recovery

    - Coffee/caffeine as a crutch in early sobriety

    - Share etiquette: speak in “I” statements, stay on topic, 3-minute timers

    - Rage, misdirected criticism, and choosing to walk away

    - Practical tools that actually help day to day

If you’re sober-curious, early in recovery, or rebuilding after a slip, you’re not alone. Drop a comment with what’s working for you, and share this with someone who needs it.

  • The Day Everything Changed: My Journey from Rock Bottom to Freedom (Part 2)
    2025/10/24

Welcome back to Part 2 of my intro to Cappy Hour. When I filmed these first episodes, I had ~10 months sober; as we launch, I’m now at 19 months and counting. In this chapter I fill in the nine-month gap, talk about how my face (and life) changed as the alcohol-induced rosacea faded, and share what actually worked: community, honest sharing, therapy for the past, coaching for the future, and daily “acceptance speeches” to keep my streak alive. I also open up about ADHD—why it’s so often misunderstood, how it fed my drinking, and why I want to be a bridge between experts and real life. There’s relapse truth, eliminating triggers (including leaving my pizza shop), and hard lessons from losing a friend in the sober community. I’m launching LEPT, my new community, and doubling down on making recovery real, relatable, and hopeful.

    What you’ll hear:

    - The moment I finally declared a real “Day Two” and how I kept it going

    - Why honest sharing in a sober community accelerates recovery

    - ADHD, emotional dysregulation, and self-medicating with alcohol

    - Replacing artificial dopamine with the real stuff (movement, cold finishes, gratitude, service)

    - How I handle triggers, perfectionism, and people-pleasing—sober

    - A candid look at relapse, loss, and recommitting to life

If you’re new, start with Part 1—and find all links in the show notes. You can find me everywhere as Sober Cappy. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sobercappy/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@Sober_Cappy

  • The Day Everything Changed: My Journey from Rock Bottom to Freedom (Part 1)
    2025/10/22

I’m Brian “Cappy” Capello, and this is Part 1 of my story. I talk about how an Irish-Italian family tree, late-blooming confidence, and using alcohol as a “social tool” turned into three decades of trouble. From college nights at Providence and my first DUI scare, to a short marriage I tried to prop up with drinks, a disastrous funeral eulogy, and getting put in “protective custody” after a One Direction concert—this is the unfiltered timeline that shaped me. I also share the three-and-a-half sober years that ended with a 2018 relapse, the six-year slide that followed, and the rock-bottom morning when my family knocked and I finally said “enough.” Today I’m two-plus years sober, building Sober Cappy and launching The Real Cappy Hour to make recovery real, relatable, and hopeful.

What you’ll hear in Part 1:

    • Why I frame my addiction as largely genetic—not a moral failure
    • How “Irish exits” became my default and what that cost me
    • Dating, pre-drinking, and trying to outsource intimacy to alcohol
    • The 2007 funeral fiasco and the 2014 wake-up call
    • Quitting cold turkey, relapsing in 2018, and a six-year descent
    • The intervention, the online community that changed everything, and what’s working now

If this resonates, subscribe and stick around for Part 2—where I break down the tools that finally worked for me and what’s next for The Real Cappy Hour.
