  • CENTURY SPEAKS 13 Transport (social history)
    2025/11/26

Essex people talk about transport and mobility in the 20th Century. They describe journeys by horse and cart, bicycle and walking miles, before cars were commonplace. We hear about the days of trams, trolleybuses and long-since axed rural railway lines. The programme also features the impact of car ownership and the building of the M11 and M25 motorways and the Dartford Tunnel. There's also discussion of cheap air travel and holidays abroad - from the Harwich to Hook of Holland ferry to supersonic jets.

Broadcast on BBC Essex (radio) in 1999. Produced by Anton Jarvis. Researcher: Elaine Tribley.
