A lifetime as Boomers has resulted in more than a few encounters with the police. All minor traffic offenses, of course—but in true Boomers on the Edge fashion, the stories are anything but ordinary!

Ron kicks things off with a story from the 1980s involving a multi-million-dollar business proposal that had to be delivered across town. Back then, proposals weren’t emailed—they were printed, bound, and delivered the old-fashioned way. After delays from the pricing committee, Ron finds himself printing the proposal at the last minute and attempting to make a 60-minute drive in, well… 45 minutes!

The result? A run-in with the police followed by a hilarious court appearance that has become legendary.

Then Kenn shares two of his many police encounters. First, there’s the time he decides that at 2:00 AM, with practically nobody on the road, it might be perfectly reasonable to drive down the middle of a divided highway instead of, you know, his actual lane.

What could possibly go wrong?

In his second story, Kenn gets pulled over and becomes so nervous that when the officer asks for his driver’s license, he accidentally hands him his credit card instead. His two teenage children sitting in the backseat? They erupt in laughter.

The University of Michigan recently announced a new pass/fail grading system for incoming freshmen, saying the goal is to help first-year students acclimate to the demands of college and let intrinsic motivation guide their academic journey.

That gets Kenn and Ron thinking: What happened to the way Boomers learned to deal with pressure?

Kenn remembers his parents paying him a dollar for every A in elementary school—but being concerned when he brought home a bad citizenship grade.

Ron looks back at being a college freshman in 1977, when 18 was still the legal drinking age and nobody was worried about creating an “easy on-ramp” to college life.

The Boomers didn’t get participation trophies, pass/fail grades, or much of a transition period. You showed up, figured it out, dealt with the pressure—and sometimes you succeeded and sometimes you failed.

So is today’s approach better for students, or are we simply raising a generation that is less prepared to deal with failure and pressure?

It’s old-school, back-to-school time on Boomers on the Edge as guest host Randy shares a hilarious childhood memory of 1970s fashion, family values, and a very different definition of manliness.

With a new school year approaching, Randy’s mom decides it’s time for a fashionable wardrobe update. She proudly picks out a matching pair of purple bell-bottom pants and a stylish wide-collar shirt—an outfit Randy isn't exactly thrilled to wear. Nevertheless, he survives the shopping trip and returns home with his new look in tow.

Back at the house, Randy finds his dad and great uncle changing the brakes on a car in the backyard. Eager to show off her son's fashionable new outfit, his mom suggests that Randy go change and model it for them. The reaction? Pure 1970s. Barely looking up from his work, Randy’s dad quips, “I didn’t see a sign that said girls allowed.” Randy’s mom is less than amused, while Randy quietly retreats to change into blue jeans and a T-shirt. When he returns, his dad smiles and says, “Hi Randy!”

The family certainly had its own unique view of 1970s manliness.

Randy follows up with another unforgettable story—this time about his grandfather attending one of Randy’s wrestling matches. So invested in his grandson's success, Grandpa climbed down from the stands during the match and began demonstrating how Randy could break his opponent’s arm. The referee promptly threw him out.
