Episode 8 | The Body & Belonging Reset (Part 1): Renew Your Mind About Food

Begin Coming Home to Your Body

Welcome to The Body & Belonging Reset, a special five-part mini series designed to help you step out of food guilt and into lasting peace at the table.

If you've ever felt trapped in the cycle of starting over on Monday, criticizing your body, or wondering why knowing what to eat hasn't actually brought freedom, this series is for you.

In part 1, registered dietitian Jamie Withrow shares why lasting change doesn't begin with another meal plan—it begins with renewing your mind. Together, we'll explore how the stories you've believed about food, health, and your worth have shaped your relationship with eating, and why God's invitation is one of grace rather than striving.

This episode lays the foundation for everything we'll build throughout the series as you begin coming home to your body with curiosity, compassion, and faith.

    In this episode, you'll discover:
    • Why information alone rarely changes our relationship with food.
    • How beliefs shape our eating habits more than willpower.
    • The hidden role shame plays in keeping us stuck.
    • What Romans 12:2 teaches about true transformation.
    • The first small step toward food freedom.
    Journal Reflection

    Complete this sentence:

"When it comes to food, I believe..."

    Then ask yourself:

Where did I learn this belief, and is it leading me toward freedom?

  • #7 – God, Food, and Freedom: Learning to Eat Without Fear
    2026/07/03
God, Food, and Freedom: Learning to Eat Without Fear

What if your relationship with food was shaped more by fear than by faith?

If you've ever prayed for more self-control around food, felt guilty after eating dessert, or wondered if God is disappointed by your food choices, you're not alone. Diet culture has taught many of us to see food through the lens of rules, restriction, and shame—but that's not the invitation Jesus extends.

In this episode of Body & Belonging, Jamie explores what Scripture says about food, freedom, and the kind of self-control that grows from abiding in Christ rather than striving harder. Blending biblical truth, brain science, and gentle nutrition, you'll learn why fear keeps us stuck, why food rules often backfire, and how to begin making food choices from a place of peace instead of pressure.

    In this episode, you'll learn:
    • Why food fear is learned—and how to begin unlearning it
    • What the Bible really says about food, freedom, and self-control
    • How diet culture narrows your life while God's grace expands it
    • The brain science behind food rules, cravings, and restriction
    • What food freedom actually looks like (and what it doesn't)
    • Three simple questions to help you nourish your body without guilt or rigid rules
    • How your identity in Christ changes the way you approach food
    This Week's Challenge

The next time you catch yourself labeling a food as "bad," "cheating," or "off-limits," pause and ask yourself:

"Is this thought leading me toward freedom, or back into fear?"

    Then practice these three questions:

    1. What is my body asking for right now?
    2. What would truly meet that need?
    3. What does God say about me?

Small moments of curiosity can lead to lasting freedom.

    What Should I Eat?

Gentle Nutrition Principles for Balanced Plates

Jamie, a registered dietitian, explains that most women don’t need more nutrition information but less “food noise” and more trust in their God-designed bodies, moving from tracking and restriction to wisdom, intuition, and gentleness. She teaches three principles: (1) define your desire by shifting food decisions from fear/avoidance (e.g., avoiding weight gain) to desire-based goals (energy, focus, setting an example); (2) add before you take away to avoid scarcity thinking by adding water, fiber, produce variety, healthy fats, mindfulness, and movement; and (3) build balanced plates with protein, carbohydrates, and fats. She discusses protein targets, carbohydrate quality and fiber, pairing refined carbs with protein/fat to steady blood sugar, and choosing fats closer to how they occur in nature while avoiding trans fats and heavily processed oils. She emphasizes consistency over perfection and previews a future meal-planning framework.

What the Bible Actually Says About your Body (And Why It Changes Everything)

Jamie, a registered dietitian, explains that a truly Biblical view of the body, food, and health that moves people away from fear, obligation, and restriction and towards stewardship, peace, and gospel freedom. Drawing from her upbringing and experience with both holistic health teachings and harmful, rule-based approaches, she contrasts two mindsets: disciplined habits fueled by shame versus disciplined care rooted in seeing oneself as God’s image bearer. Using scriptures including 1 Samuel 16:7, Genesis 1:31, Romans 12:1, John 1:14, 1 Corinthians 6:20, Ecclesiastes 3:12–13, and Galatians 5:22–23, she emphasizes bodies as gifts to honor, food as a gift to enjoy, and self-control as fruit of abiding rather than a starting point. She previews a next episode on gentle nutrition without obsessive tracking.

  • #3 – Food Guilt is Keeping You Stuck
    2026/05/25
Food Guilt is Keeping You Stuck (Here's What to Do Instead)

In this episode, Registered Dietitian Jamie Withrow explains how food guilt and shame keep women stuck in cycles of restriction, binging, and all-or-nothing thinking by triggering stress responses that reduce problem-solving and increase impulsive comfort-seeking. She describes common guilt-driven thoughts and behaviors, argues that guilt feels productive but doesn’t create lasting change, and warns that moralizing foods or labeling yourself good/bad is a heavy burden inconsistent with gospel truth. Jamie distinguishes conviction from condemnation using Romans 2:4 and John 16:8, noting the Holy Spirit’s conviction is kind, gentle, grace-filled, and clarifying, while shame is paralyzing and isolating. She offers an alternative practice—“awareness without accusation”—with three steps: notice the self-talk, write it down in a food-thought journal, and get curious to reflect on what was happening, then challenge guilt with facts or scripture (e.g., Romans 8:1, Philippians 4:8, John 8:36) and move forward without punishment.

  • #2 – Why You Feel Out of Control Around Food (It's Not What you Think!)
    2026/05/18

Why You Feel Out of Control Around Food (It's Not What You Think)

In episode two of Body and Belonging, Dietitian Jamie explains that feeling “out of control” around food is real but often isn’t a lack of discipline; it can be your nervous system and survival brain seeking quick relief when you’re stressed, exhausted, underfed, or lacking a felt sense of safety. She describes how cravings for carbs, sweets, or comforting foods can be an attempt to regulate through quick energy, sensory input, and dopamine, and warns that shame, punishment, and rigid fixes miss important context. Jamie invites listeners to practice curiosity by reflecting on what was happening before a difficult food moment and asking what they needed, aiming for awareness so food isn’t the only coping tool.

  • #1 – Stop Trying to Control Your Food
    2026/05/11

Stop Trying to Control Your Food and Start Understanding Your Body Instead.

In the first episode of Body and Belonging, registered dietitian Jamie introduces the podcast’s core message: struggles with food may not be a discipline problem but a sign your body needs understanding, care, and identity-level healing. She describes common cycles of restriction, guilt, constant food thoughts, and “starting over,” and suggests cravings and impulsive dieting can reflect nervous system dysregulation and survival-mode responses to stress, depletion, or past experiences that broke a sense of belonging in the body. Jamie contrasts shame (condemning, isolating, paralyzing) with conviction (kind, clear, Spirit-rooted), emphasizing you cannot shame yourself into lasting change and that the body is to be stewarded, not fought. She previews upcoming topics like nervous system regulation, food freedom, gentle nutrition, and biblically rooted body image.
