He runs godliness straight into affection for actual people, and then runs that into love, the word that has to include the ones who are hard to like. Every link before this one was interior work. Knowledge, then self-control. Self-control, then steadfastness. Steadfastness, then godliness.

This is the unglamorous middle of the chain. Nobody puts self-control on a coffee mug. But Peter puts it right after knowledge, as if knowing something and doing nothing with it is the most common place to stall. Then steadfastness, which is just self-control stretched over time. Then godliness, which is what steadfastness turns into when you do not quit.
