Godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. The chain ends where it always ends.

There is a version of godliness that never leaves the house. Peter closes it off. He runs godliness straight into affection for actual people, and then runs that into love, the word that has to include the ones who are hard to like. Every link before this one was interior work. This is where it goes public.

Knowledge, then self-control. Self-control, then steadfastness. Steadfastness, then godliness.

This is the unglamorous middle of the chain. Nobody puts self-control on a coffee mug. But Peter puts it right after knowledge, as if knowing something and doing nothing with it is the most common place to stall. Then steadfastness, which is just self-control stretched over time. Then godliness, which is what steadfastness turns into when you do not quit.

Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge. The chain starts here.

Notice what Peter does not say. He does not say your faith is insufficient. He says it is a starting point with more attached to it. Supplement is a builder's word. You add to something that already stands. So the question this verse asks is not whether you believe. It is what you have built on top of believing lately.
