  • Why Your Worst Days Are Not the End of Your Ministry
    2026/09/16

What do you do when one bad Sunday makes you question everything?

Maybe attendance drops, message doesn’t connect, a student you’re pouring into suddenly starts struggling. Maybe someone says something that hits a little harder than they probably realized.

And suddenly, after months of seeing God move, you’re sitting there wondering, “Am I actually doing a good job?”

    I’ve been there.

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, I talk about the emotional whiplash that can happen in ministry and why we have to be careful not to turn one difficult moment into a verdict on our entire ministry.

    We’ll talk about:

    • Why one bad night can overshadow months of faithfulness

    • The danger of turning an event into an identity

    • Why attendance is a data point, not a prophecy

    • What Jesus’ own ministry teaches us about apparent failure

    • How to keep a record of what God is doing

    • Why small wins matter

    • Why you shouldn’t make major decisions while you’re emotionally overwhelmed

    • How to separate what actually happened from what you think it means

    • Why ministry leaders need people who will tell them the truth

    • What it means to return to the next faithful thing

If you’re coming off a difficult Sunday, a disappointing event, a hard conversation, or a season where you’re questioning whether any of this is working, I hope this reminds you:

One bad night is not your ministry’s verdict.

And it certainly isn’t the final word on what God is doing in your story.

If this episode helps you, send it to another ministry leader who might need to hear it.

  • You Got the Job. Now Don’t Ruin It.
    2026/08/26

What should you do when you step into a new ministry? How do you lead well without trying to change everything at once?

Starting a new ministry position can be exciting — but it can also be one of the easiest times for a pastor or ministry leader to accidentally damage trust.

Whether you’re a youth pastor, children’s pastor, associate pastor, senior pastor, or church ministry leader, stepping into a new ministry requires more than having good ideas. You have to learn the culture, communicate with your team, build trust, and give people time to follow your leadership.

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, Josh Williams talks about how to lead well after stepping into a new ministry, including:

    * How to communicate major changes with your ministry team

    * Why your core leaders should never hear important decisions from the stage first

    * The danger of trying to change everything when you first arrive

    * The “shotgun approach” to ministry leadership

    * How to build trust with volunteers, students, parents, and staff

    * Why testing ideas with a small group can make leadership healthier

    * Why attendance numbers aren’t the only measure of a healthy ministry

    * How consistency, prayer, relationships, and faithfulness build ministry over time

    * Why leading a ministry is a marathon, not a sprint

Healthy ministry leadership isn’t about proving that you were the right person for the job. It’s about building something healthy enough to outlast your need to prove yourself.

If you’re starting a new ministry position, leading a ministry team, rebuilding an unhealthy ministry, or trying to become a healthier church leader, this conversation is for you.

Beyond the Numbers is a podcast for pastors, youth pastors, children’s ministry leaders, church staff, volunteers, and ministry leaders who want to build healthier, more Christlike ministries instead of simply chasing bigger numbers.

  • Maybe God Isn’t Late — Maybe You’re Moving Too Fast
    2026/09/02

Why Waiting on God is the Hardest and Most Rewarding Thing You'll Ever Do

    Maybe God isn’t late.

Maybe we’re just moving faster than He asked us to.

Waiting is hard. Especially when you have a plan, a vision, a job opportunity, a relationship, or a ministry direction that feels like the obvious next step. But what happens when God doesn’t move on our timeline?

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, we talk honestly about control, waiting, closed doors, ministry, and the moments when we are tempted to take things into our own hands simply because we’re tired of waiting.

Sometimes what feels like rejection is actually protection.

Sometimes a good idea isn’t your assignment.

And sometimes God’s timing doesn’t look like giving us what we’re waiting for at all. Sometimes it looks like God interrupting our plans and asking us to pay attention to the person or opportunity right in front of us.

    In this episode:

    * Why waiting can be harder than taking action

    * The difference between planning and trying to control everything

    * When a closed door might actually be protection

    * Why a good idea isn’t always your assignment

    * What David’s desire to build the temple can teach us about calling and timing

    * How pain and weakness can shape relationships and ministry

    * Why God’s timing can sometimes interrupt our plans

    * What to ask when you’re tired of waiting

    The question isn’t always:

    “God, why aren’t You moving?”

    Sometimes the better question is:

“God, am I trying to move without You?”

Beyond the Numbers is a podcast with real and raw conversations about healthy ministry, healthy leadership, church culture, youth ministry, pastors, ministry leaders, and becoming more Christlike leaders without falling into the toxic patterns that damage people.

If this episode connected with you, I’d genuinely love to hear your story in the comments.

What are you waiting on right now?

Or what is something you once desperately wanted that you’re now thankful God didn’t give you?
