What happens when a pastor gives everything to the church, but their own children get whatever is left?
Can we really call a ministry healthy if the pastor's family is suffering?
In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, we're having an honest conversation about ministry and family balance, raising pastor's kids (PKs), pastoral health, church leadership expectations, and the importance of making our families a priority.
After nearly two decades in youth ministry, I've learned something: loving ministry doesn't automatically mean we're balancing it well.
And I haven't always gotten this right.
I've worked in churches that preached "family first" but made staff feel guilty for taking time off. I've experienced leadership that questioned our decision to grow our family because of the inconvenience it might create for the church.
But I've also experienced what healthy church leadership can look like.
Today, I'm sharing some of the things I've learned about protecting family time, setting healthy ministry boundaries, including my daughters in youth ministry, and making sure our children experience the joy of ministry without carrying the weight of it.
IN THIS EPISODE:
• Why some pastor's kids grow up resenting the church
• When churches say "family first" but don't practice it
• The pressure ministry places on pastors' families
• Why I allow my daughters to participate in youth ministry
• Setting healthy boundaries for children at church events
• Flex time, ministry schedules, and protecting family time
• How senior pastors can better support their staff's families
• Why pastoral health and healthy ministry start with strong leadership and families
Whether you're a youth pastor, senior pastor, children's pastor, church staff member, ministry spouse, or church leader, I hope this conversation encourages you to examine how we're caring for the people closest to us while also building a healthier church family.
I want my kids to experience the joy of ministry without carrying the weight of it.

Because the ministry will continue long after we're gone. But we only get these years with our kids once.
