    We are 74 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and today we go back to a city we've been in a few times before, New York. But this time, we're bound for a more working class lifestyle by hitting the docks. On the Waterfront is Elia Kazan's story about a man who has to make the hard choices when faced with his work versus his morals.


    Terry Malloy works, appropriately, on the waterfront as a longshoreman. He lives what he thinks is a good life until a traumatic event shakes him to his core and forces him to confront a world of corruption and making the choice to stand up for what is right. Elia Kazan controversially tackles this subject by seemingly comparing it to his own life and ostracism for ratting out members of the Communist Party to the House Un-American Activities Committee. The problem is... he sort of cooked - but you'll hear what we think in the episode.

    We are 75 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and today we welcome a colorful cast of characters all clad in aloha shirts. Yes, Fred Zinneman's From Here to Eternity is the story of the crew of a Hawaiian military outpost in the looming days of World War II, and our 26th Best Picture Winner.


    An ex-boxer with the suspicious name of Robert E. Lee Prewitt arrives at the Schofield Military Barracks; he's pressured to join the boxing team but refuses and most of the rest of the men make his life hell for it. This movie was co-created by the Army but subsequently unendorsed due to its depiction as a giant fraternity. Which is funny given this was allegedly adapted from the "boldest novel of our time" in the 1950s - so they should have known what they were getting into. The book may be bold, and some of that boldness may have made it into the film, but how does that land for us today?

    We are 76 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and today we go to the big top - that bastion of family fun, dazzling feats of human agility and... criminal clowns? These are all part of The Greatest Show on Earth - Cecil B. DeMille's circus epic (for lack of a better word) and the winner of the 25th Academy Awards.


    A movie about the circus should have a commensurately wacky plot, and this movie delivers in spades. We get another back-to-back love triangle that features a young Charlton Heston in his breakout role; a character named Buttons the Clown played by Brainrot alumni Jimmy Stewart; gangsters; cavalcades; dogs riding horses - you name it. That's the circus baby! Such a chaotic movie is bound to bring the chaos out in us (and it does) - so how does that affect our thoughts on the film and its Best Picture legacy?

    We are 77 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and today we travel to the iconic city of love as tourists for An American in Paris, the Gene Kelly-led MGM musical that brough color back to the Oscars with a nonsensical love triangle that runs on good vibes and dance numbers.


    In this movie, Jerry Mulligan is a starving artist and American ex-GI living in, of course, Paris. He falls in love with a girl who happens to be dating his best friend all while being courted by a much wealthier woman who promises to fund his art. I won't spoil how it ends, but it's a movie that appears to be interested in the idea of what to choose between love and duty or comfort. It's also a jukebox musical featuring the works of George Gershwin, so a lot going on. That all said - how does it hit for the Brainrot crew?

    Bette Davis' Margo Channing is iconic in this movie as the aging star who is threatened by a talented newcomer named Eve. In Joseph L. Mankwiecz's classic, we get the story from all angles; every character has their story to share, which is why this movie was nominated for 5 acting Oscars. It's a movie that clicks on all cylinders and always keeps the audience guessing. It's a masterpiece of camp and acting - but how does it stand against all of the other winners we've covered?

    We are 79 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and today we discuss the rise and fall of a somewhat fake but mostly real (but still fake) American politician named Willie Stark in 1949's All the King's Men.


    Willie Stark is the governor of a fictional and unnamed American state that is stealthily set in Stockton, California. He is a stand-in for the very real politician Huey Long - the polarizing social Democrat from 1920s Louisiana. Known for his commitment to wealth redistribution and helping the poor - he also ran the state as the closest thing we've seen to an American dictator; full of corruption and self-enrichment. All men a king, but no one wears a crown... except for him. This real life persona was adapted by Robert Penn Warren into a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which then became All the King's Men. It's an American political drama that definitely doesn't remind us of anything else - but how does it hold up in the Best Picture canon?

    We are 80 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and this week we ask: To Brainrot? Or not to Brainrot? That is the question. 'Tis better to have Brainrotted and lost than... wait. Wrong one. This is 1948's Hamlet, the winner of the 21st Academy Awards.


    We welcome back our friend from Rebecca, Laurence Olivier; he has redefined himself as a Shakespearean thespian, perhaps THE Shakespearean thespian at least until Kenneth Branagh and Baz Luhrmann come around. This is one of many of his adaptations, but undoubtedly the most successful, taking home 4 Oscars, including Picture and Best Actor for himself. It's the story of a Danish prince, told arguably by recasting all the characters as lions and jungle animals - so how does a classic human-led Shakespeare fare with the Brainrot crew?

    We are 81 weeks away from the 100th Academy Awards and this week it's time for a very special episode. Like the Oscars in the late 40s, we are here to talk about antisemitism, and will do so through the lens of the well-meaning Gentleman's Agreement.


    There's something to be said about earnest tackling of social issues by movies; they can uncover real rifts within society, attemping to diagnose and even heal them where possible. However, in this movie we have a non-Jewish character pretending to be Jewish to write an article about it. It was based on a best-selling novel at the time, and it came out right after World War II, contemporary with the founding of Israel. One could argue that it's heart is in the right place - but how much weight does that carry for the Brainrot crew?
