Three things that help children—and the adults supporting them—navigate everyday life.

    Routines → Boundaries → Regulation

    Q&A Episode3 Big Questions Answered:

    1. How can “Big Deal vs. Little Deal” become a regulation tool for both children and parents? We explore how recognizing the difference between a child's big feelings and the size of the actual problem helps adults hold boundaries calmly, avoid escalating little moments into big ones, and model regulation for their children.

    2. How can we create a quiet space that actually helps a child regulate? We discuss why a child's bedroom can be an important, positive regulation space—not a place for punishment—and why the space needs to reflect the individual child's developmental, sensory, and emotional needs.

    3. How do we figure out which regulation tools actually work for our child? Rather than choosing tools because they are popular or because they sound calming, we look at how parents can observe their child's individual sensory needs and identify what helps that particular child get organized, regulated, and ready to problem-solve.

What does it really mean to be regulated, and how do we help children—and ourselves—handle the moments when life doesn't go according to plan?

Regulation is not the absence of big feelings. It is learning how to recognize what we need and respond appropriately to what is happening. Routines, boundaries, and regulation work together. Routines create predictability, boundaries clarify expectations, and regulation helps us navigate moments when things become difficult.

Flexibility is a regulation skill. A routine should support a family, not control it. Adults regulate too. Children learn regulation through supported experiences with adults before they can consistently manage it independently. Every age needs different levels of support. Independence grows gradually as children develop the skills to recognize their needs and use regulation tools.

Everyone has regulation tools. Using support is not a sign of weakness; it is a way of helping ourselves function successfully. Asking the question, "Is this a big deal or little deal?" is about matching our response to the actual situation—not allowing frustration to determine the size of our reaction.

  • S1E2: Boundaries - The Everyday Foundations
    2026/08/28

How do we create boundaries that are clear, consistent, developmentally appropriate—and actually doable for families?

In this mini-series we discuss the Everyday Foundations. We started with routines, which create the framework. In our second episode we clarify the boundaries or expectations within that framework, and in the third episode we will discuss regulation in order to explore what happens when the child or adult has difficulty staying within that framework.

In the last episode we discussed routines. The next step for a good routine is to set boundaries - clear expectations. Boundaries are not about controlling children. They're about creating a predictable framework in which children can gradually learn responsibility and independence.

Even if you understand why your child is struggling to complete a task or expectation does not mean you should remove the expectation. It means you need to figure out what support the child needs in order to meet it independently. Visit our website for support tools you can use!
