How do we create boundaries that are clear, consistent, developmentally appropriate—and actually doable for families?
In this mini-series we discuss the Everyday Foundations. We started with routines, which create the framework. In our second episode we clarify the boundaries or expectations within that framework, and in the third episode we will discuss regulation in order to explore what happens when the child or adult has difficulty staying within that framework.
In the last episode we discussed routines. The next step for a good routine is to set boundaries - clear expectations. Boundaries are not about controlling children. They're about creating a predictable framework in which children can gradually learn responsibility and independence.
Even if you understand why your child is struggling to complete a task or expectation does not mean you should remove the expectation. It means you need to figure out what support the child needs in order to meet it independently. Visit our website for support tools you can use!
