Founder/CEO Anas Andy Shallal shares his most valuable lessons learned as an artist and social entrepreneur who “didn’t have a pro forma, business plan, excel sheets, or big decks,” yet managed to launch and successfully scale Busboys and Poets, a group of culturally conscious restaurants that also function as bars, bookstores, coffee shops and event spaces in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. With refreshing candor, Andy opens up about hard decisions and growing pains, how to learn from mistakes, and let go of preconceived notions on leadership or success.  He tells us why it’s so hard, yet so crucial, for founders to be able to allow space for people with differing opinions. Finally, he offers perspective on finding the balance as a founder and lifelong activist: that we don’t have to lead a “double life” - our work and personal beliefs can be intertwined.

He is the founder and CEO of Busboys and Poets, a group of restaurants in the Washington Metropolitan area where art, culture, and politics intentionally collide over mindfully sourced, food, drinks, and programming that feeds the mind, body and soul.
With nine locations in and around D.C., including the latest locations and Anacostia and Columbia, Maryland Busboys and Poets has become home for progressives, artists and intellectuals, including such notables as the late Howard Zinn, Cornell West, Alice Walker, and Nikki Giovanni. Busboys and Poets is a member of the Restaurant Opportunities Center, focusing on the system on sustainable business and employment practices. Busboys and Poets has also been at the forefront of environmental stewardship, being one of the first businesses in Washington, D.C., to be 100% wind powered and are at the cutting edge of the local and sustainable food movement, winning many awards locally and nationally for its innovative conscious cuisine.
Shallal has received numerous awards, including the Mayor's Art Award, Employee of the Year from the Employment Justice Center, the Mayor's Environmental Award, Washingtonian of the year from Washingtonian magazine, and the D.C. Hall of Fame.  He holds an MBA from the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland Colle

Founder, CEO and Social Impact Entrepreneur Jotaka Eaddy shares her thoughts on what needs to change to create a more inclusive, equitable world in tech and politics for Black women and people of color.  She shares how failure and imperfections can actually set us up for success, and how her roots as a community organizer and connector have served as the foundation for her to continue to widen the doors for representation for Black women and marginalized people everywhere. Finally, she talks about overcoming imposter syndrome by speaking truth to power, raising the uncomfortable questions, and creating the “space and grace” to love ourselves as perfectly imperfect leaders.

Activist Alice Wong talks to Gregory about disabled culture and queer communities, why failure is essential, and how she got the confidence to boldly “make the world a brighter, sassier, and more colorful place.” She unpacks “crip” as a form of kinship, reclaiming disabled wisdom, and community organizing in political spaces. Finally, they bond over both being born in the Year of the Tiger and celebrate Alice’s debut memoir, Year of the Tiger: An Activist's Life.

Comedian Cristela Alonzo (she/her) knows how to face her fears and laugh about it.  Cristela was the first Latina to create, produce, and star in her own network sitcom, Cristela, and is now releasing her new comedy special on Netflix, Middle Classy.  Gregory talks to Cristela about how she was able to advocate for her worth as a woman of color, silence self-doubt, and trust her intuition.  Looking back on her journey, Cristela lets us in on how she addressed stereotypes and the pressure of representation as a brown woman.  She shares how fear of failure, especially in Latina/x/o communities, can keep us from realizing our true potential, and why being a boss is no longer about chasing money, fame, and self-serving power.

About Cristela:
Cristela Alonzo made history in 2014 when she became the first Latina to create, produce and star in her own network sitcom, Cristela, for ABC. During that same year, she split her time between Los Angeles and New York City to serve as one of ABC's favorite guest hosts on their hit daytime talk show The View. In 2017, Cristela made history again when she became the first Latina lead in a Disney Pixar film, when she voiced the part of Cruz Ramirez in Cars 3. Her new standup special, Middle Classy, is currently streaming on Netflix. Cristela's memoir, Music to my Years was released in October of 2019 by Atria books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. Aside from comedy, Cristela focuses on advocacy work fighting for issues such as immigration, universal health care and lower income communities. She works with numerous organizations, including Special Olympics Texas and Planned Parenthood, and is a board member of LUPE,  La Union del Pueblo Entero and an advisory board member for Define American.

Gregory talks to political strategist Anathea Chino (she/her), Acomo Pueblo, on creating the space to lead while cultivating the courage to be exactly who you are. Anathea shares how she overcame struggles with imposter syndrome as a queer, Indigenous woman, and “introvert” who is now the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Advance Native Political Leadership.

As she advocates for representation for Native and queer individuals, Anathea shares how she developed the tenacity and grit to handle “so much rejection”, and how living in her truth inspired her 9-year-old cousin. 

Finally, we investigate how embracing vulnerability and the fullness of our identities creates the space for connection and change - in politics, at home, and within marginalized communities.

Anathea Chino (she/her), Acoma Pueblo, is a Queer Indigenous woman working to create pathways that ensure women of color, Queer people and Indigenous people are visible and represented in the U.S. political landscape. Anathea has more than 18 years of experience as a political strategist, fundraiser, and operative at the tribal, state, and national levels.

Anathea co-founded and is the Executive Director of Advance Native Political Leadership, the first and only national Native organization aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of Native Americans and local and state elected leadership. Previously, she worked at Ultra Violet, Democracy Alliance, and Neiman Marcus.

Anathea was selected for the She The People's 20 for 2020, a list highlighting women of color and politics to watch in 2020. She currently serves on the National Board of Directors and Advisory Boards of  Americans for Indian Opportunity, California Native Vote Project, Emergent Fund, and Inclusv. Anathea is a Co-Principal for the Women's Democracy Lab, a project created to radically re-imagine what leadership looks like and ensure Indigenous women and women of color can thrive in elected office, a co-founder of Indigenous Women Rise, and a founding Board Member and former President of Emerge New Mexico.
