  • #13- Building a Business Around Your Passion with Cayla Naylor
    2025/05/30

    Based Business W/ Cayla Naylor

    [00:00:00]

Parker McCumber: I firmly believe that any entrepreneur can create a business around what they love. I am here today with a special guest, Kayla Naer, who has done an excellent job of taking her passion for design and creating a business around it, and I'm really excited to see this launch go live. Uh, Kayla, would you please tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?

Cayla Naylor: Yeah. My name is Kayla and I am a surface pattern designer. I originally started out as an engineer, so I went to school for civil engineering and I worked as a civil engineer for a couple of years. And then when I became a mom, I really wanted to do something from home. So I bought an iPad and started doing digital art.

And at first, you know, I, I thought it would be fun to sell nursery prints. I've always been obsessed with kids and everything around kids, so I thought it'd be fun to do nursery prints and, you know, it went okay. But honestly, it wasn't until I found a course [00:01:00] through Instagram that I got into surface pattern design.

And then from there I found my way to designing for fabric companies, for wallpaper companies. I've designed, you know, journal covers and planners and so many fun things with my surface patterns. So from there, sorry. I You're good. So I really wanted to see, I feel like I'm about to just die. Are you okay?

Ugh. Okay. So I used to be, I used to have asthma really? And I outgrew it, but I've started feeling like it's coming back. Okay. Could it be o also allergies? It's definitely allergies related, because I've heard this year related year alone, it's like 200% more than last year calling. Sorry, I didn't mean to totally derail you like that.

You're good, you're good. I'm like sitting here. I'm like, because like, I totally, I'm gonna choke. See, this will be something that I maybe edit out or maybe we have like a blooper reel. I don't know. [00:02:00] Uh, I think it's really cool. So you got into design. Yes. Obviously you had a, a knack for it and a passion, and you were, you know, working on all these different projects and not just in one realm, like you mentioned.

Yeah, it was fabric, but it was also covers for, you know, buy like books and things like that. Yeah. It's really cool. One that you find something that you're passionate about and that you enjoy doing. Two, it's really awesome that you make it a career and then. Now I think you, uh, are starting your own endeavor, right?

Yes. Little Laura Lane, correct? Yes. Tell us a little bit about that and what got you into that. Yeah, so I've also had a dream of making a difference. I know it kind of sounds a little cheesy, but I've always wanted to do like some humanitarian trip or be able to take something and, you know, make the different, a difference in people's lives and so.

You know, [00:03:00] talking with my husband, we tried to figure out how I could relate my love for service pattern design, my love for family and kids, and my love for making a difference in the world. And so we decided to come up with Little Laura Lane, where I designed the patterns for baby pajamas, and these are bamboo pajamas, so they last for a very long time.

They're super stretchy, super durable, temperature regulating just. The best quality that we can put out there so that we can take these pajamas to people in the community. We have a little page on our website that's called Give Back, where people can nominate families that are struggling or in need so that we can be able to take them pajamas or a care package or anything like that.

We also live near a children's hospital and I cannot wait to be able to take some of the pajamas to the kids there. So I just wanted to, you [00:04:00] know, come up with a way to make a difference to help those that I love and be able to share what I love. I love the concept of the give
