  • S2 E5 The Protective Illusion of the Black Superwoman Complex Pt 1
    2024/07/25

The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life, not for the sake of excellence but in an effort to be seen as equal in a society that sees little value in her and believes she's undeserving of access to meaningful resources and success. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs.

Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss the origins, signs, and some of the adverse mental and physical health impacts of the black superwoman complex.

    Learn:

    • The sometimes-overwhelming challenges of mothers training to achieve excellence and become physicians
    • Exercise as a cathartic release, reinvigoration, and treatment of mild-to-moderate depression
    • How a tribal mentality and the fight for resources led to a social structure designed to maintain a dominant patriarchy’s profit, power, and pleasure

  • S2 E4 How Veteran Employment is Set-Up to Fail
    2024/07/18

Veterans are at increased risk of committing suicide within the first year of leaving active duty and suffering job loss within 2 years after becoming a civilian. This is in direct contrast to the expectations of both veterans and employers, who expect great workplace success but are often mistaken and disappointed. Why are veterans more likely to fail in the civilian workplace the more successful they are in the military? What active duty supports and resources are lacking in civilian life? How do we—the loved ones, community, and businesses—help facilitate their successful transition to employment?

U.S. Navy Captain (retired) William Toti, author of “From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership,” discusses these questions and offers solutions to facilitate veterans’ successful transition to civilian employment.

    Learn about:

    • What does PTSD look like?
    • Why are veterans at increased risk of suicide?
    • Why some veterans fail to succeed in their civilian careers?
    • How to assist veterans in understanding their new, corporate missions.
    • How companies can help ameliorate skill gaps for their new veteran employees and facilitate their successful civilian employment
    • Changes veterans can make to ensure their successful transition to the civilian workforce
    • Veteran and military mental health resources, including the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, where you can call, text, or chat 988.

    Bio:

William Toti is author of “From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership.” He served for more than 26 years on active duty, culminating as commodore of Submarine Squadron 3, then fifteen years as a corporate executive culminating as CEO. He has been featured in several documentaries to include: “The Lost Ships of World War II” (Fox), “USS Indianapolis: The Final Chapter” (PBS), “USS Indianapolis: Live from the Deep” (PBS), “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy,” “9/11: One Day in America” (National Geographic), “9/11: The Pentagon” (The History Channel), and “9/11: Inside the Pentagon” (PBS).
