Zo considered a strange house in a neighborhood that he happened to be jogging in. There appeared to be some people moving into this house, and they were talking to a person who looked like he was dressed as a utility worker of some sort? The house itself was the oddest thing that Zo had ever seen. It looked like a bunch of glass cubes seemingly merging into each other. The family looked like they were excited about moving in, but Zo got the heebee-jeebies just from looking at it. Best to look away and keep jogging.

Zo finds himself in New Essex, North Carolina. It's a nice sleepy little town. It seems like it would be a nice place to live, but Zo has heard rumors of an ex-convict loose on the town. Talking to most people this man seems to keep to himself. He seems intelligent, polite and generous. Every once in a while he'll even pay for a stranger's order at a restaurant just to be friendly. The rumors persist, though. This man, after all, was convicted of rape and assault; has he been truly rehabilitated? The rumors persist because there is a well-to-do family that seems to be absolutely terrified of him. Why do they fear him? It doesn't seem like he did anything wrong . . . yet.

Zo visits the cool, crisp air in the mountains of the tiny, cozy town of Silver Creek, Colorado. Usually, not much goes on, but this year there's a massive blizzard: phone lines are shut down, roads are closed, travel is hazardous and one of the country's most prominent Victorian romance novel authors is missing. It's famously known that the talented writer Paul Shelton takes his vacations in this sleepy town and Sheriff "Buster" McCain is on the case to see if Sheldon can be found. There's little hope that the case will be solved. The whole area is covered in over a dozen inches of snow for miles around making the search difficult. There are those who assumes that he may have had an unfortunate accident, but hope remains that he may be found alive. Somewhat coincidently Sheldon's new novel, Misery's Child, hits the bookstore. There's not much that Zo can do at this point but settle down and enjoy the latest novel featuring its star character Misery.
