Zo finds himself in New Essex, North Carolina. It's a nice sleepy little town. It seems like it would be a nice place to live, but Zo has heard rumors of an ex-convict loose on the town. Talking to most people this man seems to keep to himself. He seems intelligent, polite and generous. Every once in a while he'll even pay for a stranger's order at a restaurant just to be friendly. The rumors persist, though. This man, after all, was convicted of rape and assault; has he been truly rehabilitated? The rumors persist because there is a well-to-do family that seems to be absolutely terrified of him. Why do they fear him? It doesn't seem like he did anything wrong . . . yet.
