Facing Your Fears: How to Decide, How to Cope, and Why It Matters: Fear is a normal part of life, but not every fear needs to be conquered. This week, Lily and I explore how to tell when a challenge is worth it and when it is perfectly fine to give yourself a break. We share personal stories, like Lily’s recent blood test and my own flying anxiety, and dig into why having a choice and an exit plan can make all the difference. You will learn:How to know the difference between healthy fear and unnecessary pressureWhy having an exit plan or a “way out” can make scary things less dauntingThe importance of knowing your “why” before taking on a challengeHow anticipatory anxiety often feels worse than the actual eventWhen it is okay to walk away from something that does not matter to youWhy repetition and gentle exposure can help reduce anxietyHow every small win builds confidence for the next challengeThe power of self-compassion and permitting yourself not to do everythingKey TakeawaysYou Always Have a ChoiceFacing your fears is about feeling empowered, not pressured. If you feel anxious or on edge around them, it’s a sign that something isn’t right. The Lasting Impact on Adult ChildrenToxic parenting can fuel self-doubt, anxiety, and difficulty trusting your own judgment well into adulthood. These patterns often recur in other relationships, making it challenging to set boundaries.Setting Boundaries Without GuiltBoundaries protect your emotional health, not punish your parents. It’s okay to say, “I need some space.” Expect resistance, but remember your well-being comes first.Self-Care and Finding SupportHealing takes time and support. Prioritise self-care – whether it’s journaling, therapy, or connecting with understanding friends – to help you feel safe and valued. You Are Not AloneMany struggle with guilt and doubt when setting boundaries with parents. • Break Free from Trauma Bonding | Take Back Your Power
    2025/06/17
Break Free from Trauma Bonding | Take Back Your Power Trauma bonding can keep us stuck in relationships that drain our self-worth, confidence, and happiness. The cycle of hope, hurt, and confusion makes it incredibly difficult to walk away—even when we know it’s not healthy. If you recognise yourself in this, you are not alone. Trauma bonds are powerful, but you CAN break free and reclaim your inner power. In this episode of Ask Dr. Jodi, I unpack what trauma bonding really is, why it happens, and how it can quietly undermine your mental health and relationships. We’ll explore the root causes, the emotional risks, and—most importantly—practical steps you can take to start healing and rebuilding your sense of self. Many people struggle to understand why they stay in relationships that feel both necessary and draining. Trauma bonding can make leaving or changing these dynamics feel impossible. Key TakeawaysWhat trauma bonding means and why it happens in the brain and bodyHow trauma affects memory, emotions, and the stories we tell ourselvesWhy feeling “different” or “broken” after trauma is a normal human response, not a personal failingThe dangers of isolation and why connection (even small talk!) is crucial for healingHow trauma bonds can become unhealthy, especially when power tactics or manipulation are involvedThe difference between healthy interdependence and overdependencePractical steps to build a support network and plan for safety if you need to leave a harmful relationshipWhy not all trauma bonding is negative, connection with people who truly understand you can be healingThe importance of diversity in your support system and taking time to build trustThis episode is full of compassionate, practical advice for recognising trauma bonds, protecting yourself, and moving towards relationships that lift you up.Resources mentioned in this episode:Watch the video of this episode at the blog: https://jodiaman.com/blog/trauma-bonding/Dr. Jodi Aman’s YouTube Channel: @DoctorJodiDrama triangle Video: https://youtu.be/atekZLTQ0mYGeneration Z Mental Health Resource Guide: jodiaman.com/guideRedirect Positive Mindset Cards jodiaman.com/order-redirect-flash-cardsEnCompass SEL Class Activity jodiaman.com/order-encompass-gameAnxiety, I'm So Done with You!
