Starting his remarkable journey in April 1884 from San Francisco, Stevens cycled across the United States to Boston, where he boarded a steamer to England. Undeterred, he made his way to Karachi and crossed the vast expanse of India. After a journey by ship from Calcutta to Hong Kong, Stevens ventured onward to Japan, ultimately completing an astonishing 13,500 miles by December 1886 in Yokohama. This first volume captures the essence of his travels from San Francisco to Teheran, where he spent the winter, offering a fascinating glimpse into a world long past.
