Nolan Arenado’s thumb inflammation forces him out of a crucial Diamondbacks game, with rookie Jose Fernandez stepping in — but don’t panic: manager Lovullo says it’s not serious and Arenado’s back for Wednesday. Despite a down season marred by injuries, the 35-year-old still leads the team with 25 homers and flashes Gold Glove defense. Fernandez, meanwhile, brings speed and solid bat, though he can’t match Arenado’s elite defense. Losing the veteran slugger for even a few games would sting — his power, experience, and playmaking are irreplaceable as the D-backs chase playoff dreams.

Michael Soroka made a strong return to the mound, delivering a quality start against the Marlins with just 80 pitches. He allowed only two hits and one earned run — a solo homer — while striking out six batters. His ERA dropped to 3.45, and his sinker velocity climbed to nearly 96 mph. Most encouragingly, his slurve — thrown 31% of the time — continued to dominate, generating plenty of swings and misses. Soroka exited the game tied at one, proving he’s a reliable force as the Diamondbacks push for postseason contention.

The Marlins clawed their way to a gritty 4-2 win over the D-backs in extra innings, thanks to a clutch three-run double from Esteury Ruiz in the 11th that sealed the deal. Griffin Conine kept Miami alive with a solo homer in the ninth, setting up the dramatic finish. The D-backs had multiple chances — including a late-inning double by Ketel Marte — but couldn’t capitalize, leaving runners stranded and falling short in the end.
