    Across the mesas of northeastern Arizona, Hopi traditions preserve accounts of emergence, migration, sacred geography, powerful nonhuman beings, clouds, rain, celestial cycles, and responsibility to care for the earth. In modern popular culture, selected elements of these traditions have been recast as memories of visitors from another world. Katsinam become astronauts. Masks become helmets. Earlier worlds become planets. The Blue Star Kachina becomes a prediction of extraterrestrial return.
    This episode examines how that interpretation developed. It begins with a public Hopi origin account in which people emerge into the present world, meet Maasaw, accept responsibilities toward the earth, and travel in search of their Center Place. It follows ancestral migrations through the Southwest, the late nineteenth-century records made by anthropologist Jesse Walter Fewkes, Frank Waters’s influential 1963 Book of the Hopi, and the ancient-astronaut template popularized by Erich von Däniken after 1968.
    The strongest alternative theory argues that sacred language may preserve transformed memories of physical sky visitors and lost technology. The strongest conventional explanation sees the same material as a living religious and ecological system shaped by ceremony, oral history, astronomy, migration, and cultural responsibility. The evidence shows that Hopi relationships with the heavens are genuine and old. But does any securely documented source describe spacecraft, extraterrestrial beings, or imported technology? And when did the modern idea of “Hopi Star People” enter the story?

    Near the Dead Sea, damaged parchment fragments recovered from Qumran Cave Four preserved part of an ancient story once known in full mainly through Ethiopian manuscripts. Written in Aramaic centuries before Christianity, these fragments confirmed that Jewish communities preserved a developed account of the Watchers: two hundred heavenly beings who descended on Mount Hermon, took human wives, taught forbidden arts, fathered giants, and faced a sentence of imprisonment.
    The story appears in the Book of the Watchers, the opening section of First Enoch, a composite Jewish work that expands four difficult verses in Genesis about the sons of God, human women, and the Nephilim. Ancient-astronaut proponents see physical details in the account: an organized descent, knowledge transfer, hybrid offspring, conflict among nonhuman powers, and confinement after an unauthorized intervention. They ask whether religious language preserves a transformed memory of visitors from beyond Earth.
    The strongest conventional explanation places the text in the religious and literary world of Second Temple Judaism. Scholars connect it to Genesis, Jewish apocalyptic thought, and Mesopotamian traditions about antediluvian sages who transmitted specialized knowledge before a flood. Yet the earliest form of the tradition, and whatever may have inspired it, remain beyond direct recovery.
    The manuscripts establish that the Watchers story is genuinely ancient. They do not establish that the beings were extraterrestrials, angels, or historical visitors. What kind of truth did its ancient authors believe they were preserving?

    In the Bandiagara region of Mali, Dogon communities maintain rich and varied religious traditions shaped by ritual, oral teaching, history, and centuries of cultural exchange. In 1950, French ethnologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen published an account of Sirius-related teachings they attributed to four named Dogon informants: Ongnonlou Dolo, Innekouzou Dolo, Yébéné, and Manda.
    Their report described a Sirius-associated object that appeared small, heavy, difficult to see, and linked to a long cycle often compared with the orbit of Sirius B, the dense white-dwarf companion of Sirius A. The resemblance became one of the most famous claims in ancient-astronaut literature after Robert Temple argued that Dogon traditions about the Nommo preserved memories of contact with beings associated with Sirius.
    But Sirius B had already been inferred by European astronomers in 1844 and observed through a telescope in 1862. That shifts the question. Did Dogon religious specialists preserve an older body of astronomical knowledge, or did modern science enter a living oral tradition through colonial contact, travelers, schools, scientific expeditions, or the ethnographic encounter itself?
    Later fieldwork by Walter van Beek failed to recover the Sirius system as a widespread Dogon belief, yet critics argued that restricted ritual knowledge cannot always be easily replicated. The astronomy is established. The origin of the reported knowledge remains contested.
