What if the story of Noah’s flood wasn’t the first version of the story?

In the final deep dive of our ancient pantheon series, we’re going all the way back to Mesopotamia — Sumer, Akkad and Babylon — and some of the oldest surviving written stories we have.

We break down the Sumerian flood of Ziusudra, the Epic of Atrahasis, the Babylonian Enuma Elish, and the flood account told by Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh — then put them beside the biblical story of Noah and the Flood.

What happens when one world ends and another begins?

In Episode 18 of Ancient Aliens in Modern Times, Stephanie and Melanie continue their Pantheon series across Mesoamerica and the Andes. Melanie explores the Nahua story of the Five Suns, the great flood, and Quetzalcoatl’s journey into the underworld to bring humanity back to life. Stephanie travels to Lake Titicaca and Tiwanaku, where stories of Viracocha describe a world overturned by water and a new creation emerging from the sacred landscape.

Along the way, they compare the themes that keep resurfacing in ancient traditions: cycles of destruction and renewal, divine creators, sacred sound, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
