What if the story of Noah’s flood wasn’t the first version of the story?

In the final deep dive of our ancient pantheon series, we’re going all the way back to Mesopotamia — Sumer, Akkad and Babylon — and some of the oldest surviving written stories we have.

We break down the Sumerian flood of Ziusudra, the Epic of Atrahasis, the Babylonian Enuma Elish, and the flood account told by Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh — then put them beside the biblical story of Noah and the Flood.

And the similarities get WILD.

We get into Enki and Enlil, the creation of humanity from clay and divine blood, the gods’ attempts at population control, the mysterious warnings delivered through a wall, enormous ancient lifespans, sacrifices after the flood, immortality, and the serpent that steals Gilgamesh’s chance at eternal life.

Then we descend into the Mesopotamian underworld with Inanna — through seven gates, death, three days and three nights in the realm of the dead, and her resurrection through Enki’s life-giving plant and water.

What happens when one world ends and another begins?

In Episode 18 of Ancient Aliens in Modern Times, Stephanie and Melanie continue their Pantheon series across Mesoamerica and the Andes. Melanie explores the Nahua story of the Five Suns, the great flood, and Quetzalcoatl’s journey into the underworld to bring humanity back to life. This week on Ancient Aliens in Modern Times, Melanie and Stephanie dive into one of the oldest spiritual traditions we’ve explored in our Pantheon Series: the Vedas, Vedic philosophy, and the traditions that eventually developed into what we now know as Hinduism.

And there is a LOT to unpack.

We explore the Rig Veda, Bhagavad Gita, Krishna, Agni, Varuna, Soma, prana, dharma, meditation and the 33 Vedic gods while attempting to make sense of how these ancient texts, deities and philosophies actually fit together.

Stephanie takes us into one of the most fascinating pieces of early Vedic tradition: Sanskrit chanting as ancient sound technology.

Long before these teachings were written down, they were memorized and passed from teacher to student through incredibly precise patterns of sound, pronunciation, pitch, rhythm and repetition. The words mattered — but so did the exact way they were spoken and sung.

Which raises a very interesting question:

Was sacred sound simply a form of prayer… or did the ancient Vedic traditions believe sound itself could influence reality?

Then, because apparently ancient civilizations really loved a good flood story, Melanie uncovers the story of Manu.

Manu is warned of an approaching flood by a mysterious fish, builds a vessel, survives the destruction and eventually reaches a mountain.

We compare the Vedic flood story with Noah’s Ark, the Epic of Gilgamesh, Greek mythology and other ancient flood traditions and once again ask why civilizations separated by geography and culture keep telling remarkably similar stories.
